Date: Fri, 29 Mar 1996 00:38:04 -0800 From: bet@earthlink.net (Ben Teller) Subject: EAGLES CENTER Press Release March 23, 1996 EAGLES Center expands services - sets sights on South Bay Just as Lou Sheldon and the Religious Right are attempting to have federal funding cut off to public schools that provide programs which serve the needs of gay, lesbian, and bisexual youth, EAGLES Center, Los Angeles Unified School District's alternative high school which serves many of these youth, is looking to expand and open another campus in the South Bay-South District area of Los Angeles County. EAGLES Center (Emphasizing Adolescent Gay/ Lesbian Education Services), founded in 1992, is the LAUSD continuation high school that serves students who have dropped out or are considering dropping out of their own schools because of the extreme social pressures they must deal with because of their sexual orientation. EAGLES Center provides a safe and accepting environment for these youth who wish to continue and complete their education. "It's remarkable to see these youth making something of their lives, rather than taking their lives," comments teacher and founder Jerry Battey. With two campuses already serving youth in the (West) Hollywood, Downtown, and East LA communities, EAGLES Center is now looking for space in either the Carson or Gardena areas to serve students in the South Bay beach communities, South Central LA, San Pedro/ Wilmington, and Long Beach areas who are unable to make the long commute to Hollywood and East LA. Since LAUSD continuation schools are required to be a no-cost item to the District, space to house the school must be donated by the community. EAGLES Center is supported by a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, Friends of EAGLES Center-Los Angeles, Inc. Tax benefits apply. Volunteers, tutors, and equipment will also be essential in making our new campus possible. If you, your business or community organization is able to provide about 1000 square feet of space in the Carson/ Gardena area of Los Angeles and/ or you are interested in being involved with educating our youth, please contact teacher/ site coordinator Sander Miller by phone at (310)427-2613, or by e-mail at EAGLES Ctr@aol.com ******************************************************************************* | Benjamin E.Teller | "ADAM'S APPLE: A protuberance in | the throat of man, thoughtfully (213) 876-7967 home & worK | provided by Nature to keep the | rope in place." bet@earthlink.net | | --The Devil's Dictionary | Ambrose Bierce | **************************************************************************** ** ****************************************************************************** To send a message to the entire list "dq-la", email dq-la@abacus.oxy.edu This list is managed by the program MAJORDOMO@abacus.oxy.edu *******************************************************************************
