We believe our voice speaks for the majority of Australians and yet it is not being heard above the strident, loud, organised, minority voice of some people. Sayings such as squeaky wheels get the oil and hollow logs make the most noise come to mind. We would like to remind the media and the Hansonites that even if we accept that 13% of Australians support her views that still leaves a very healthy 87% who do not and their voices are not being heard. http://www.nanou.com.au/hanson/ Therapeutique page http://www.nanou.com.au/hanson/chip.html ---> Wik on-line petition The Indigenous Law Centre at UNSW, along with Father Frank Brennan, SJ, offers you the opportunity to sign, on line, a petition that will be submitted to the Senate, regarding the Parliament's response to the High Court's Wik decision: http://www.austlii.edu.au/unsw/centres/ilc/ ---> Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation Reconciliation is a process which strives to improve relations between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the wider community. It is based on recognition of: the unique position of indigenous Australians as the original inhabitants of this continent; the need to overcome continuing disadvantage they suffer as a legacy of policies and practices which dispossessed them of their traditional lands, separated indigenous children from their families and actively discouraged their participation in Australia's economic and social development; the wish of the vast majority of Australians to participate in the creation of a confident, harmonious nation as we approach the Centenary of Federation in 2001. http://www.austlii.edu.au/car/pplmvmnt.html ---> Gay and Lesbian Immigration Task Force GLITF (NSW) Life has suddenly changed in Australia and the Gay and Lesbian community seems to have been rejected by the Howard Government. News Update Thursday May 22nd 1997 from our Web Site at: http://www.glitf.org.au/news.htm The Minister for Immigration has cut the Interdependency numbers from 400 for 1996/7 to just 200 for next year. What is he telling the gay and lesbian community? It looks as though we are definitely not welcome here. Now is the time to make it clear that we will not tolerate this blatant homophobia and give a warning that support will be withdrawn for John Howard and his Government. David Moss Co-Convenor mailto:glitf@dot.net.au ---> Lesbian & Gay Pride WA Perth never believed that the annual Pride Parade could get any better but on November 4 1995 it did. The parade doubled in size from 1994 and doubled in spectacle. The Money Street warehouse was used for the first time as the venue for the end of Festival Month celebration dance and the most successful party drew a sellout attendance of 2,500. Funding rounds for 1996 saw a total of $31,000 being returned to the lesbian and gay community in the form of grants for a number of projects ranging from sports events, theatre, exhibitions, conferences, parade floats, information campaigns and education programmes for individuals and groups in the community. This resulted in the annual Parade once again overtaking the previous year in size and spectacle. And in 1997, it just gets bigger and better ... http://www.pridewa.asn.au/ Welcome to Queer Perth, Western Australia. With this in mind, articles will address and complicate the interrelations and interdependencies between the analytic axes of class, race, gender, age, sexuality, nationality, and so on. 'I am accustomed to great tasks. My island is a cliff, a bulwark against the river and my life on it is good. I live here alone. I chose this. I chose this island in the middle of the mouth of a great river where the water is wide and deep green.' When Valentine's gay friend Ryan disappears, she is drawn from her island to the wider world where her rules don't apply. And for Detective Jane Stewart, uncovering a motive for Ryan's murder soon becomes more than routine investigation. But the river doesn't give up its secrets easily. River's Edge is an extraordinarily evocative novel about murder and corruption, retribution and redemption - both mystery and morality tale, it's also an exploration of human commitment. Cath Phillips' career has included being president of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, founding editor of Capital Q, then editor and publisher of BURN. River's Edge is scheduled for release on 19th May 1997, but may be already available in some bookshops. It's also available directly from BlackWattle Press, by email, web, or post (PO Box 142, Broadway NSW 2007) for $15.95 which includes postage to anywhere in Australia. mailto:blackwattle@pinkboard.com.au www.pinkboard.com.au/~blackwattle ---> Songs Of Australia The Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir will break new ground with its next concert, Songs Of Australia, at Sydney Town Hall at 8pm on Saturday June 21. The program features five premiere performances, four of these being works by Australian composers commissioned by the choir with financial assistance from the Australia Council. Special Guest will be tenor Michael Smith. The main choral work, which gives the concert its title, is Songs Of Australia by Martin & Peter Wesley-Smith. Originally performed in 1988, this is a biting satire of Australia's bicentennial celebrations. These 10 songs include When We Are Old And Gay. The program also includes performances of works by Australian composer Nigel Butterley. In the Songs of Australia concert Bright Day & Sunset will be premiered. Nigel's settings are like scroll paintings - economical, lyrical, passionate and evocative. Gordon Kerry was the first composer to receive a commission from the choir. Settings of poems by David Malouf and Emily Dickinson will be premiered at the concert, and his electrifying setting of Rita Mae Brown's Sappho's Reply for female voices will also be performed. The choir will present the Australia premiere of Arvo Part's recently published Solfeggio, a mesmerizing piece which treats the do, re, mi of a C major scale in a way that is light years away from Rogers and Hammerstein's song in The Sound Of Music. The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir will fly to Europe in July, 1998 to perform in London, Paris and at the opening and closing ceremonies of the Gay Games in Amsterdam. In Amsterdam it will also take part in the cultural festival which will involve choirs from around the world. This concert isthe first major fundraising event for the tour.
