Next time you're out on the scene enjoying yourself, just ask yourself if you could do it in a wheelchair. The fact is, in common with most public venues, our pubs and clubs are largely inaccessible to wheelchair users. In most cases, it's not any deliberate policy on the part of the owner or operator of the premises - they were probably built long before wheelchair access was an issue. But it's not a cheap problem to solve. The Edinburgh Lesbigay Centre is currently being looked at with a view to putting in a lift and/or ramp - but initial estimates run at ukp50,000 which is probably about half of what the building is worth and it may be cheaper to move to other more suitable premises! However, for most larger commercial venues, that's sweetie money when a major refit is being planned - and it's something that many of the major brewers are taking on board when the opportunity arises. They realise that for every person who can't get into their premises because of access problems there are probably half a dozen of their friends who will go elsewhere with them - and that adds up to a lot of lost business. All that's really required is for people to THINK when they're next planning a new venture or a re-vamp of an old one. Architects are becoming used to planning buildings which allow all to use them - but they'll only do so if it's part of their brief - they have to be told that the requirement is there. It's not as if lesbigay people aren't wheelchair users: there's no reason to believe that the proportion of wheelchair users amongst our community is any lower than that of the population as a whole. In fact, with AIDS/HIV, it may well be higher. In the cases where it is deliberate policy to exclude those in wheelchairs - and such places are thankfully few and far between - there's often a misplaced belief that the presence of wheelchairs will remind patrons of illness and disability when they're out enjoying themselves. Of course, nobody will ever be honest about such ludicrous grounds for discrimination - most often things are dressed up in general concerns about fire regulations, etc. Remember - being in a wheelchair - like being sexually attracted to those of the same gender - isn't a choice. As lesbigay people, we know what it's like to be discriminated against - and it's not very pleasant, is it? We should be doing our level best to ensure that unwarranted discrimination against minorities in our own community is not tolerated - even if only out of self interest because those of us who do have full use of our legs never know how long that may remain the case. John Hein -------------------------------- SCENE NEWS ========== Edinburgh: In Edinburgh, the main news is the opening of Buster Brown's as a gay venue. The former straight venue, is to open initially on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Manageress Karlynne Sellstrome, whom many will remember from the heady days of the Laughing Duck (or the Giggling Goose) to those who remember the story, tells us that it is time that the gay scene had a more permanent disco in the Capital. It is hoped to expand to other nights in the near future. One thing this old queen can remember about Karlynne from the past is that she had STYLE, let's hope she brings some of that to BBs. On speaking to Paul Ivison, the out and about person from GS, I hear that Number 18, the Edinburgh sauna exclusively for gay gentlemen is really beginning to pick up and has become a real part of the scene in its very short existence. Pulse called in to see the owner, Mrs Dykes (believe), when we were last in Edinburgh. "I cannot believe how supportive the gay scene has been to this new venture. Everywhere I turn people are wishing us well and offering to help if they can. It takes your breath away". A lot of gossip has being doing the rounds centring on whether the old Chapps Club Bar is to re-open or not. One such rumour is that it is to be opened as a Pantomime Bar (oh no it won't, oh yes it will, oh no it won't). Well Pulse can kill that one stone dead (boo). Former proprietors of Chapps, Andy and Ray, tell us that although no final decision has been made, it would seem unlikely that they will be reappearing at that particular venue. They will be concentrating on the now busier than ever Newtown Bar, and look forward to seeing all their friends from Chapps. At the time of going to press, we are informed that the organisers of the Mr Gay UK competition were still trying to find a new venue to replace Chapps for their Edinburgh heat, more news as it comes in. Remember that the Newtown's cellar bar "Intense" is now open on a Friday and Saturday from 9pm. On the theme of competitions, pop the 13th of March into the diary. For the first time, a gay bar - Route 66 has made it into the final of the Pub of the Year, run by the Evening News. So get round and give Stevie and the staff all your support in their party night. Good Luck folks. Manchester: This must be the funny season - something or other. The amount of rumours flying around seem to be growing week by week. According to the gossip, Mr Blackpool, Basil Newby, is about to open up in Manchester at the old Applejack Club. Well, PULSE can exclusively confirm that this is not the case. The bold Basil has no plans on the horizon at the moment to spread his wings to England's second city. Do you think the guy is a millionaire or something? One rumour that seems to have a bit more solidity to it is that Boddingtons are interested in the building adjoining the Rembrant. More news as it comes in. And again, strong rumours that the old restaurant behind McTucky's is to open as a leather/denim bar have come to the fore. Like the Boddington's saga this one seems to have a realm of truth about it. Major changes are about to happen at the New Union. With the expected 2am license due in the next couple of weeks, changes in the DJ line up are also expected, allowing room for more cabaret evenings. Already started is the Tuesday evening Blind Date, which has to be seen to be believed. Over at the Rembrandt, Thursday's very popular women only night, Sappho's, in the upstairs bar, continues to pack them in. As reported in last month's Snipits, the removal of Strangeways to the new site at Rockworld has now been completed. The re-launch on Saturday 18th Februay featured the Coming Out Crew live on stage. Not for the faint hearted, Strangeways opens its doors at 3.30am on a Sunday, and it's boogie time until 12 noon. Now this is one for the real party animal who is into a frantic mix of nu-nrg, techno and intelligent dance. Now for something a little more laid back, we hear of plans to start up a Country and Western night for queens. More news soon. Now where are those darn spurs Lulu-bel? Liverpool: Over in Liverpool, the battle for supremacy of the clubs continues between The Escape and Garlands, all of which can only be good for you the customer. The first major scoop for the Escape was their very successful heat of the Mr Gay UK competition, which was played out to a very full house, the winner being local lad Keith Glynn. As we go to press, we hear that the Escape have finalised the menu for March and some of the highlights to look forward to are appearances by, Randy, Lizzy Drip, The Smooth Operator, Richard Lee, Deckar, Fonda Cox and Zoe Tyler. A message for Peter and the staff at Time Out from a couple who were visiting the pub last Saturday. They have asked me to thank you for a fab time, and although the pub was very very busy your staff were just magic. Message done, yeh! Glasgow: Following on the back of his performance at the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow, Sir Ian McKellen attended a little soiree laid on at Glasgow's lesbian and gay cafe "Eat Out". A full house, many straight(?) from the theatre, turned up to help promote Glasgay!, the forthcoming lesbian and gay arts festival which is to be held in the city from 27th October to 5th November 1995. The final figure raised at the Gay Ball has now been released by the Glasgow Bars AIDS Welfare Committee, with the fantastic sum of ukp5054 (gross) being raised for Ruchill Hospital. Well done to all those who chipped in. The committee are looking at the possibilities of moving to a larger venue for next years Ball. The City Chambers have been noted in some gay magazines as the next venue for the Ball, but at the moment, a city centre hotel is being looked at and is more likely to be the venue should it be moved from the ferry, as soon as details are finalised you will, of course be the first to know. Now! remember to get your denim and checked shirt out for the mid-summer do, that promises to be a wee bit special. More news of that soon. By the time we come out, Callum should be in place as the new manager of the Waterloo Bar, following the departure of Vicky Morrison to pastures new. We at PULSE wish Calumn all the best in his new position. Are there more and more people coming onto the Glasgow gay scene this weather? "Why do you ask?" I can hear you saying. Well, first of all, she who must be obeyed, along with a friend and I called in after the movies a couple of Fridays ago and had to use a shoe horn to get to the bar... Now I know that Betty-B is popular - but. Secondly, at the sixth birthday bash at Squires, with drinks being only 50p a time, I have never seen so many people in one place at a time. With the cut price drinks and the new look bar, I think every queen for forty miles around had to be seen to be at what was deemed to be the party of the year. I bet that put a smile on the faces of the boys behind the bar who were working their butts off. Not that it lasted for long, for as soon as it got busy the glass washer (no not you Ellis) broke down. PULSE contacted David after the party and was told "If that was indicative of the first six years trading, roll on the next six". ------------------------------------------------- FOCUS ON BRADFORD ================== Think of Bradford and the first thing to come to mind is - curry. The curry capital of the country has spent many years acquiring its crown, a fact that isn't lost on the PULSE team whenever we are down that way. However, the quality of the gay scene, is also worth a shout. Although small, the Bradford scene is very vibrant with a good mix of people of all ages and types, from young fluffys to the more mature and manly types who along with the lesbians all join in the melting pot that seems to make up the Bradford (happy family) scene. The Bavaria Tavern (mixed bar), which last year celebrated its 100th birthday is open seven nights and has become the favourite of the local lesbian scene. With quiz nights on a Wednesday, disco on a Friday and women only on a Tuesday the bar has a real local and friendly feel to it. Worthwhile digging this one out, especially if you are into pool. Since we last were in Bradford, the Sun has come under new management, the new incumbent - Ron, is continuing in the by now famous Sun tradition of providing the very best of in-house fun entertainment. A traditional circular bar lends to the atmosphere and makes everyone, no matter where they sit, feel part of the furniture. For the bear lovers amongst you all, the Sun has a monthly meeting on the second Friday of the month (Down, Stu!). Resident DJ Steve keeps the pot boiling and with regular guest spots by other DJs the music scene is as good as it is varied. a recent innovation is the Sunday lunch club with free pool and bar snacks to take care of the munchies. Round the corner, you are all invited to cum to Caligula's (the home of all that is naughty and fun). Well, PULSE came on a Friday and was welcomed by a young and eager crowd, young of mind and eager to please (themselves of course). One of the highlights of Caligula's is none other than Lucie Lastic who provides all her fans with their weekly helping of karaoke, Wheel of Fortune and drag of the highest calibre. Split over two floors, Caligula's has something for everyone. On the lower floor, Lucie does her thing ably assisted by the DJ and between them they never let you rest. Just the job for a party atmosphere. Upstairs, the rather more dimly lit disco is heaven for those hell bent on some serious cruising, snogging or whatever takes your fancy (within the law of course - as archaic as it is). Now here is one for the travellers amongst you. What do the licensing authorities of Bradford and Glasgow have in common? The answer is simple: they are both housed on the same ark as Noah. No strippers, no gesticulations, no exhibitionism, in fact no fun if they had their way. Just as well pooves and dykes know how to enjoy themselves despite these damp squibs in the local councils. So regardless of the backward few, Bradford is well worth a visit, and be prepared to party, party, party. -------------------------- RE-VIEW This month young Braithwaite is on holiday, so we sent the fat one to run his eye over a couple of productions soon to appear at Glasgow's Tron Theatre. VENUS and ADONIS (Wed 5th - Sat 8th April) "They that love best, their love shall not enjoy". Shakespear's sexiest poem Venus and Adonis has been carefully chosen by both the Actors Touring Company and the Hairy Marys for this joint ground breaking tour in the spring of the year. In an exhilarating portrayal of love and obsession, an ingenious combination of video and film is used to interact with the cast of three (Carmelle McAree, Ona McCracken and Susan Swanton), creating an innovative and modern interpretation of the bard's most beautiful poem. The classic story of the goddess Venus and her passion for the youth Adonis explores the boundary between love and hate and the battle between men and women. The siting of the Tron Theatre for this production can only enhance what promises to be one not to miss. DIARY OF A NEW YORK QUEEN (Tues 18th - Sat 22nd April) "In this Finley presentation, we defy you not to laugh". Hot on the heels of the outstanding success achieved at the 1994 Edinburgh Festival, the comedy Diary of a New York Queen is sashaying into the Tron and is expected to take the town by storm. The play leads the audience tantalisingly through the intrigues of Fashion, Friendship, Love, Divorce, Murder, A Moose, and self-Discovery - all seen through the eyes of the acerbic and camp 27 year old played by Harold Finley. It is Christmas 1984 in New York City. Nicky, a 27 year old man, for whom fashion is the most important thing in the world, has received his Christmas present from his older lover Harvey. Is it the red Missoni sweater he's been craving? No it's a Diary! From this well meaning gift a virtual Pandora's Box of adventure is unleashed in Manhatten. Follow Nicky through the seasons of love, gossip, sex, scandal, heartbreak and designer labels as he learns more about himself than he was ever prepared to learn...THIS IS THE ULTIMATE STORY OF THE ULTIMATE QUEEN. Gordon Gosnell ---------------- MYSTIC PEG ========== Welcome to our new style stars column with Mystic Peg (who would have been here last month, but due to unforseen circumstances her maiden appearance had to be delayed) Welcome aboard! ...and so to this month's star sign. Pisces - Feb 19th-March 20th This month's "man" (slag) of the month is James from Glasgow (but alas, the photo was forgotten... Sigh...). His date of birth is 7/3/73 and was born at 1am. The symbol for Pisces is the fish (two forming a perfect 69). The Piscean is indead a very fishy character. He is a sly, slithering creature. Like the fish he will slip through your fingers when you try to pin him down (so butch). A dreamer by nature, he will rarely finish anything he starts (I know the feeling). He is self indulgent and passive with little control over his emotions. Tears come easily to the Piscean. The masochistic Piscean loves dark and secret places (like a gay pub when they dim the lights), but like the Piranha his little fish eyes are always scanning around for his next victim. No one can please a Piscean, he is a psychopathic liar living in a fantasy world (big words - ed). He is always chronically disappointed when reality does not match up with his fantasies. The Piscean needs constant reasurance (honest dear it really is big enough), fuss over him and his gratitude will be embarrassingly servile and effusive, but don't be to flattered, he might be grovelling at someone else's feet tomorrow. He will pretend that he is not worthy of you as a means of extracting your promises of devotion. Piscean men are not very exciting as sexual partners unless you have sadistic tendencies (now where did I put that whip?). They are very passive, almost female in the act (fish sign). Sex is not important to them as they do not always have enough energy to perform. They use up their energy in their fantasies and emotional experiences. Pisceans are often heavy drinkers (ever wondered where the saying " drink like a fish" came from?) The Piscean needs a lover who will assume responsibility for him so that he can drift through his aimless life. The Piscean with other water signs: Pisces - Like a storm at sea Cancer - Makes for depression Scorpio - Perfect, the Sadist and the maschist with earth signs. Capricorn - The earthy capricorn would turn to mud. Taurus - Brick hard Taurus would get pissed off with the Piscean tears. Virgo - Virgo would remain a virgin as Pisces tend to follow rather than lead. The Piscean with fire signs: Aries - Pisces would disappear in a poof of steam. Leo - Pisces would soon put out his fire. Sagittarius - Like a sauna, Ice water on hot coals. Pisces with air signs: Gemini - Who is going to believe who here, both are liers in a big way. Libra - Oil and water and all that stuff. Aquarius - Pisces would just love this little water carrier. If you would like to nominate yourself (or a friend) as next month's victim and have them receive a free full Natal Chart from Peg (worth ukp25!) just send us your date, time and place of birth, your full name and address with a contact telephone number and one passport sized photo (which will be returned, unchewed!) Send them all to our office no later than the 25th of the month. If we get flooded, the editors choice will be final. If you would like a personal reading you can contact Mystic Peg on 0141-423 2423. ------------------------------ ON THE BALL =========== Glasgow's second Gay Ball seemed to have come round rather quickly. "My God, is that a year already?", I heard from some of the organising committee. How time flies when you are having fun. Seriously, back to the Renfrew Ferry, the same venue as the very successful 1st ball, in 94. "Why change it if it ain't broke?", was one cry from some of the survivors of last year's event. Out came the pearl balloons, the streamers, the tartan tablecloths, the best dresses (and that was only the guys), the full highland regalia, the odd uniform or two, and of course the time trusted tuxedos. The Ferry had its best dress on, and now for the party of the year. They came from all over the place, from London, from Liverpool, from Edinburgh, and of course from the Holy City itself, to join in with their friends to try and raise a few quid for a very worthwhile cause, and what a job they made of it, the final total being just over ukp5,000. Take a big pat on the back everybody who gave so generously of their time and money. A big thank you must go to all the people and businesses, (too many to list) who donated prizes to the raffles. Without their support it wouldn't be the same. A special thank you must go to the staff at the Ferry, who worked so hard to ensure a good time was had by all - enabling a few hangovers to get established the following morning. A fabulous camp night was had by one and all and the Cinderella hospital at Ruchill can once again look forward to some financial help in their work with those less fortunate than ourselves. ------------------------------------- SNIPITS ======= Michele Lupo, the Italian - born fashion designer, convicted of a string of gay murders in 1986, has died in prison with complications from AIDS. Lupo went on an eight week killing spree in London after learning that he had contracted the HIV virus. At his trial he admitted to the four killings and two other attempted murders. 100 women who claimed that their lives were ruined after they received a letter telling them that they had been treated by an HIV-positive health worker, have won the right to sue for compensation. A judge at Manchester High Court ruled that the women, who have been permitted to launch claims against Tameside and Trafford Heath Authorities, should have been told face to face about the worker, believed to be a gynaecologist. None of the women were diagnosed HIV-positive, but lawyers claim that the women could claim for damages on the grounds of stress. British prisoners are to be tested for HIV as a part of the biggest survey on HIV transmission ever carried out in British jails. Scientists are putting the finishing touches to the plans to begin screening thousands of volunteers in the next few months. Newcastle lesbians and gays have claimed that the Northumbrian police force's planned homophobic monitoring scheme may be doomed to failure because the local force keeps computer records of people's sexual orientation. The police have refused to delete part of their computer system which allows officers to register the sexual orientation of anyone arrested for a criminal offence, despite the fact that the database's existence has put the force's new scheme in jeopardy. Edinburgh's lesbian and gay switchboard were joined by over 400 friends to celebrate their 21st birthday in the Capital's Assembly Rooms. A full house was entertained by an eight piece band. During the night raffles and various fund-raising events raised ukp1,200. Gay Playwright Oscar Wilde has been honoured with a permanent memorial in London's Westminster Abbey in the latest of a number of ceremonial events marking the centenary of Wilde being jailed for gay sex offences. The unveiling of a special plaque in Poets Corner in the Abbey also marks 100 years since the opening of Wilde's most successful play The Importance of Being Earnest. ----------------------------------------- HEALTH MATTERS ============== Hepatitis - Know your A,B,C. Hepatitis simply means inflammation of the liver. There are various causes for this including alcohol and drugs, but one reason is infection with the Hepatitis A,B or C virus. How can viral hepatitis be transmitted? There are a group of viruses (A-G) which can all be passed on sexually, as well as by other means. Hepatitis E, F and G are very rare in the UK and we will therefore concentrate on A-D which are more common. Hepatitis A This virus is present in the gut and is mainly contracted by swallowing (usually in food), but rimming can also lead to infection. Recent reports of Hepatitis A in gay men have been increasing. It is rarely fatal although symptoms can be very unpleasant. Hepatitis B This is a real health concern for gay men. Carriers, of whom there are 6% in the UK, will show traces of the virus in all their bodily secretions. Spread can therefore occur by sharing body fluids in any way, including sex or needle sharing. It is about 50 times more infectious than HIV, so what is relatively low risk for HIV may be high risk for Hep B. It can be fatal leading to long term liver damage. Hepatitis C This virus is more commonly passed on by sharing needles with someone who is infected but it can also be spread sexually, although this is more rare. Infected drug users are therefore at much greater risk of this strain of the virus. Hepatitis D This is really a "passenger" virus which will only cause infection if you already have the Hep B virus. How do you know if you are or have been infected? Symptoms may appear up to six months after contact with the infection. Most people, however get no symptoms and those who do may pass things off as a type of influenza. Mild fever, tiredness, loss of appetite, gastric upset and yellowing of the skin and eyes are some of the signs. After a few weeks the majority of people recover completely. A variable number become carriers' despite the outward appearance of being healthy. Treatments usually consist of rest and monitoring but may include some drug therapies depending on the level of liver damage. The good news is that both Hep A + B can be prevented. Vaccinations are available at all GUM/Sexual Health clinics. As with all sexually transmitted infections practising safer sex and using condoms for oral and anal sex will certainly reduce your risk. If you are concerned that you may have been in contact with any of these viruses or would like to be vaccinated why not call in to your nearest GUM/Sexual Health clinic for a confidential free check up. ---------------------------- BACKTALK ======== About PHACE... As Oscar Wilde might have said, "To loose one set of funding is a misfortune, to loose three is indicative of a severe problem". But, that's precisely what's happened at Scottish Aids Monitor where funders seem to be pulling the plug with monotonous regularity. First to go was Highland, then came the Gay Men's Project in Edinburgh - very much SAM's home turf. The latest setback for SAM has been the loss of their Strathclyde grants to a totally new organisation called PHACE West which is largely fronted by former SAMmers. Whilst SAM complain about the secretive way in which PHACE West went about securing the funding at SAM's expense and agonise over the fact that their computer system was compromised by former staff or volunteers, PHACE West have been outlining what they see as the problems in SAM which led to their formation. PHACE West's Head Honcho Ken Cowan, a well kent and respected face in the Glasgow HIV/AIDS field, was quite clear about it all at the first public meeting which they held. There have been a number of problems with SAM - principally management ones. It seems that an Edinburgh based management were totally out of touch with and insensitive to what was going on in Glasgow and one Glasgow project was even being run by a guy in London! The surprise removal of SAM Directors last year - for no reason that's ever been properly explained - hasn't helped public confidence in SAM. Especially when SAM's Chief Executive Maureen Moore resigned over the way in which it had been done - she's now with PHACE West. SAM, on the other hand, whilst honestly acknowledging many of the problems, claim that their structure was in the process of changing and that things were improving. PHACE West probably haven't done themselves any favours because of the secretive way in which they were set up. And it's true to say that they are a self appointed bunch - although Ken Cowan promises that they will introduce a democratic structure as soon as they are up and running. Whatever the truth of the matter, the fact is that PHACE West have now got the money and SAM haven't. Without going into personalities, and it's clear that there's a lot of that behind things, PHACE West have carved things up quite nicely thank you and SAM would have to fight a long and damaging campaign to re-establish their supremacy in the West. We don't believe that SAM should try to do that. It's now up to the heid bummers of the two organisations to hammer out how best for PHACE West to quickly take up the provision of the services for which SAM will no longer have funding. Any further in-fighting (public or behind the scenes) may be generally entertaining to outsiders but will do nothing for the people who are the rationale for both organisations - those living with AIDS/HIV.
