In Stirling, the ancient capital of Scotland, there were once a number of societies for the local merchants and tradespeople. There were five incorporated trades (the most important of which were the butchers), 'tolerated professions' and a merchant guild. But, oldest of all was the Ancient Society of Omnium Gatherum. In any civic procession, they were the first in line. The trade of Omnium Gathering was a simple one - if there wasn't a society which covered your particular area of trade or commerce, then you were a member of Omnium Gatherum - the rest. Despite coming first in presidence (and having the most elaborate costumes), the Ancient Society had absolutely no power whatsoever - which is presumably why the powerful Trades had no objection to them leading off. Sometimes, on lesbigay marches like Pride, I wonder if we too could do with the equivalent of Omnium Gatherum. After all, not all of us are members of Stonewall, Thames Poly Gaysoc or the MCC. Neither are many of us happy to walk behind the banners of the SWP, the TORCHE or even the Labour Campaign for Lesbian and Gay Rights. Wouldn't it be nice to have our own banner - at the front of the march - with all the rest following behind in their rightful place? Sadly, the Ancient Order is no more. Its last recorded transaction was on the occasion of Queen Victoria's Silver Jubilee when the leaders decided that they would not participate in the civic procession. Instead, they decided to hand out all of their remaining funds in the form of a grant to each of their members so that they could each drink a loyal toast to Her Majesty 'privily indoors'. In other words, instead of going on the parade, they stayed at home and blew their funds on a party. Perhaps the Modern Lesbigay Society of Omnium Gatherum could do both. I know I usually do! Readers of both the electronic and printed editions of Pulse should note that the above Read Me! appeared in the printed edition of Issue 20. The Read Me! which appears in the printed edition of Issue 22 was sent out with the electronic edition of Issue 20. This is known in the publishing business as 'A Cock Up'. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- SCENE NEWS ========== Liverpool: This month we are going to have a look at two of Liverpool's gay clubs, Reflections and Garlands. Next month we shall be calling into the Lisbon, Paco's Bar and the Curzon Club (we don't want to spoil you all at once now do we.) Garlands Cafe Bar/Disco seems to be the more trendy of the two places we visited this month. The young disco crowd there seem to like their music in the dance variety, supported by a reasonably good quality sound system they are happy to continuously dance the night away to the energetic beat (oh where's my zimmer?). Seriously though, if its a good dance night you want then this could be the place for you. Now here is a plus for any of you visiting the Liverpool for the first time. Entry to Garlands disco on a Friday and Saturday is only ukp1.50 (can't be bad.) If you don't want to wait until disco time, you can always try the cafe bar, open from 12 noon. A very large and spacious bar, there you can eat, drink and be entertained by the large mobile screens and Satellite T/V. This must be one of the few bars to offer water therapy to the stressed-out amongst you. Puzzled? Call in and see for yourself. Round at Reflections, its a different atmosphere from Garlands. The management here seem to have tried to create a more down to earth, dark and seedy feel to the place. They have succeeded. However this does not detract from, but only adds to the clubs atmosphere. One good point as far as I am concerned, is the quiet bar, always a plus in a multi - bar establishments. A haven of rest in a sea of sound. If you thought the weekend prices at Garlands were good, hold on to your hobby horses. Entry to Reflections at the weekend is only ukp1.00. All in all, my first thoughts on Liverpool were that of just another big city, however my experiences on the gay scene convince me that this "dirty old town"as the song goes, really has something to offer. Go for it. Blackpool: On behalf of HEAL, Basil Newby and the people of Blackpool would like to say a big thank you to all those readers who were at the all day charity event that took place at Basil's on the Strand, Pepe's, and the Flamingo on Monday the 2nd of May. Your generosity has helped to raise over ukp2,000 which has been matched by the Manchester based Village Charity to give a grand total of just over ukp4,000 - to be distributed among local charities. Once again many thanks to all those brilliant cabaret acts who gave their time and energy. A big thanks goes to Kevin Peters, poor lamb, who lost his voice in the process. Pepe's bar is open on seven days a week, and starting the first week in June is leather week, this leads up to the leather and steel weekend at the Flamingo on June the 10th. Moving back to Pepe's, the delectable Craig tells me that they are going to start theme nights for those who are looking for something a bit different. I can't wait for the leather, rubber and construction nights. Along with this clone zone are putting on a fashion show along side the shop in the bar on Friday night of leather week. The music at Pepe's is mainly Hi - Energy, and the strippers that appear on a Wednesday night are of a very high quality, believe me I've seen a few in my time. The decor is about to change to suit the theme nights. We are aiming to provide something that bit different. This looks like being a good month to visit Blackpool, what with all the usual entertainments and a visit by the one and only Freda Payne on the 17th. Blackpool certainly knows how to entertain its gay customers. See you about. Tony. xx. Glasgow: As ever the Glasgow Bars AIDS Welfare Fund are busy on the fund-raising front. The lovely Georgia can be seen doing the rounds of the bars with a raffle of a decorated bottle of Champagne, a must for any queens dresser. Robert and May Miller are once again giving of their time and effort in Austin's Bar on Monday the 18th of July. I hear the committee will soon be out among you all with the ticket for the Grande Raffle with such prizes as holiday vouchers, meals for two, and lots of booze. So give it your best shot. Now for those of you who were sober enough to remember the Ball on the Ferry, have I got news for you. Undaunted by following such a success, the committee have booked the Ferry once again. This time it's Wednesday June the 29th, for a touch of summer madness with "A Midsummer Nights Scream"- just when you thought it was safe to bring out the wallet, eh? Give till it hurts, sisters. Tickets are available from the bars at ukp5. Dress casual. On the pub and club scene, things are a bit quiet this month. Bennets seem to be having a round of PAs this month, with visits from such groups as Menergy and Motive 8. Watch your favourite bar for flyers. The forth coming Scottish Pub week should throw up one or two unusual nights at your local, however I shall be surprised if anyone surpasses one planned by the Waterloo Bar, it is hoped to see an appearance by "Mr Hairy" all 5ft of him. One not to be missed. Now here is one with a difference for those of you who are prone to dining out on a Sunday lunch. Mother India, 28 Westminster Terrace/Sauchiehall Street, will be serving lunch to the gay community from 12 noon until 5pm. You can feast on an extensive menu for ukp11 and can bring your own bottle. So if you fancy a different Sunday out! Tel: 041-221 1663 for bookings. Tel Morice we sent you. The future of one of Glasgow's Gay Bars has recently been put in doubt. Guys Bar, in the town's south side, has recently changed hands. Bar Manager Kevin tells us "as yet I have had no instruction as to whether the bar is to be run as on previous lines, and continue as Glasgow's latest gay bar". The new owners were unavailable for comment. One of the town's longest established mixed bars, The Alpen Lodge, is the subject of a very strong rumour that gays are no longer welcome. It is claimed that GLASGOW AIDS WELFARE FUND were stopped from collecting via raffles as the new management team were unhappy about AIDS being mentioned whilst collecting amongst the mixed company. A future fund raising event in the Alpen Lodge by the welfare fund has been cancelled. PULSE spoke to one of the businesses partners Mr John Branney who denied the rumours and stated that " Gay people will always be welcome as long as they behave themselves". From what PULSE has seen, it is not the gay customers the Alpen needs to look to. Edinburgh: The queen is dead, long live the queen. Or should that read Queens? Martin Walker and Iain Duthie, paint pots to the ready have in no time turned the mess left by the outgoing Blue Moon Cafe into the Edge Club Cafe. Once again Edinburgh's Gay Centre has its very own in house eatery. The new management team hope to bring a friendly, comfortable and inviting atmosphere to the place, providing vegetarian dishes from all over the world at very competitive prices. When we called in on the opening day, it was a bit on the busy side, however the service was up to scratch and delivered with a pleasant smile. At a time when many Lesbian and Gay business are feeling the financial pinch, it is good to see someone having a go. Up the road at QTs, June is definitely bursting out. What with the continuing talent contest, Maggies Blue Monday, (stripper night to you and I) featuring Diablo, Leo, and the one and only X-Calibur. Towards the end of the month (24th and 25th) its two nights with Suzy Star and Co. Then if that's not enough there is always the Tuesday night Karaoke. On the theme of new bars, it would seem that Edinburgh is to have yet another new gay bar/disco. Pulse can exclusively reveal that C-C-Blooms will soon feature among the capital"s list of gay establishments. Situated at Greenside Place, next to the Playhouse, C-Cs will be open seven days a week from 12 noon until late, serving food and drinks (including a large selection of wines). Where will it all end? Leeds: Once again, PULSE has managed to get its little organ into a new area. Actually, we were asked to be among you, such is the price of fame - ah! Seriously we felt is was about time we started to give it to you Leeds folks - PULSE that is, so here we are. Each month Alex will be among you all-getting all your news and gossip, so beware! The Bridge Inn on the 5th of July hosts one of Leeds most unusual events - the Pre-Christmas Party. The party will be hosted by super star - CHRISSY ROCK who along with all the staff will be tarting it up to ensure you have a cracker of a time. It would seem that Leeds queens are preparing for Mastermind, with all the quiz nights that are going on it would seem like it, eh? For those just wanting a good laugh, you could just watch at the Penny on Mondays, the Red Lion on Tuesdays, and the Bridge on Wednesdays. Look out Magnus. As we go to press we hear that MESMAC are to put on a week and a half of fun events called M-Appeal. So enjoy and remember to stay safe as well. ALEX. Bradford/Wakefield: As it is our first visit to Bradford and Wakefield, I thought a brief look at what was available wouldn't go wrong. In Wakefield's Dolphin Pub the effervescent Stuart and the team will be doing all they can to brighten up your day or night, as it were, so to speak. With regular entertainment ranging from drag, strippers, karaoke, bingo, and quizzes there is always going to be something for everyone. June the 22nd sees a very special charity night in aid of Wakefield's HIV charity, BEGIN. It is hoped to beat the last target of ukp600. The charity bash will be hosted by Mr Blackpool himself Kevin Peters, who with a host of other acts will be entertaining you. So if they can give thier time, I am sure you can give your dosh. Over in Bradford it is going to be a really busy month. Caligula's, apart from all the usual fun and games, have on the 25th of June Bradford's Best Bum Competition - cheeky. This along with the 4th of July promotions on Colt 45 and Budweiser should fairly keep you ticking over. For those of you with a large appetite, it is "Eat My Dish" competition on the July. If you fancy doing your bit for the community, why not pop along to Nancy's Lesbian and Gay Tea Dance at the Queens Hall (where else) on Sunday 3rd of July, (1pm - 6pm). With a sliding scale of prices and a subsidised bar it would make a great start to that Sunday night out. Nancy's is a community initiative that makes no profit. Have you ever wondered how Dorothy got back to Kansas? Well maybe she went via Bradford. The ever busy MESMAC this month are putting on Kansas, with London DJ. Ariel. Once again this is at the Queens Hall on the 9th of July. Tickets are ukp5. For details contact MESMAC. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- FOCUS ===== Hi, and welcome to FOCUS. Yet another new column in your ever growing favourite magazine. Each month we shall be casting an eagle eye over a different pub in a different area. To start with we thought we would have a look at one of Scotland's longest established gay bars, the Waterloo Bar in Glasgow. The Waterloo, now decorated out in a mixture of military and Ming, with pride of place going to an original oil and canvas painting of the battle of Waterloo, wasn't always such a well kept house. Before it was taken over by the current owners Tennents Taverns (Bass Charington) it had a bit of a reputation as a down to earth cheap wine shop. However under careful management, all this has changed. Although sometimes still down to earth, the cheap wine shop image has gone for good, being replaced by a well run managed house. A lot of this is down to the no nonsense style of management of the current manageress Vicky Morrison, who ably assisted by her No 1 Joyce Grey, runs a tight ship, firm but friendly. Very often Vicky has had to play a sympathetic mother when one of her locals is going through the mill a bit. The Waterloo and its customers also have a very good name, along with some of the citiy's other gay bars, when it comes to fund-raising for charities. It won't be the first time the bold Mrs Morrison has jumped up onto the top of the cigarette machine and coaxed more donations out of the already well giving pockets of her regulars. Being a Tennents pub you will of course find all the usual Tennents beers and spirits including a rather nice pint of keg 80/- beer. The bar also stocks its fair supply of foreign bottled beers. Snacks and toasties are also available. The Waterloo like many other gay bars is not short in putting on live entertainment several nights a week. All in all a very friendly bar, and one you should give a visit to if you are in town. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- CLASSIC INTRODUCTIONS ===================== Hi Renata here! Listen and Enjoy. RENATA. PS: To the reader in Blackpool - No, I'm not the same Renata with the ad on your local toilet wall! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- PICCADILLY RADIO - MAKING WAVES Manchester is arguably the UK's gay city. It has the highest proportion of gay men and lesbians of any city in the UK, and this is reflected in the open, cosmopolitan atmosphere felt throughout the city. At the heart of gay life is the UK's only true gay village, offering not only gay pubs, cafe bars and clubs, but gay restaurants, shops and even 2 gay record labels. And as if to give recognition to the gay movement of the city, Manchester's Piccadilly Radio, one of the largest and most successful commercial stations in the country, has just been awarded finalist status in the prestigious New York Radio Awards for two on-air campaigns on sexuality and HIV and AIDS. The campaigns were run by Piccadilly Action, the flagship social action service, managed by CSV Media which broadcasts round the clock, throughout the year on Piccadilly's Key 103 and Piccadilly Gold. The service also provides information support to listeners, via a 24 - hour telephone service and information packs, mailed on request. Piccadilly Action's Producer, Chris Buckley, who has a long track record of working in independent radio, masterminded the two campaigns through close liaison with North Western Regional Health Authority. Producing the two campaigns also relied on support from a large number of local agencies including Manchester Gay Centre, Body Positive North West, MESMAC and Manchester Gay Parents Groups. "The challenge was to promote a positive message to a traditionally conservative family audience," says Chris. The HIV campaign "Living with HIV", told the stories of three men living normal lives with HIV and AIDS. The three spoke positively about the way they live their lives to the full. We offered the National Aids Help line number for any listeners wanting more information. When CSV Media took the bold decision to tackle the sensitive issue of sexuality on air, the team at Piccadilly Action knew the importance of not only getting the facts right, but making sure the message didn't become watered down. We weren't encouraging people to be gay - that's obviously something we know can't be done, says Chris. We wanted to highlight that living a gay life can be very ordinary - and very fulfilling. We adopted the phrase "Some people are gay, some people are lesbian and some people aren't" which summed up exactly what we wanted to say. Both campaigns prompted a huge amount of interest, and a lot of support from the gay community in Manchester. My favourite line from the campaigns came from the mother of a gay son, who said "nobody tells us that perfectly ordinary families have perfectly ordinary lesbian daughters and perfectly ordinary gay sons." Getting positive messages across is what Piccadilly Action is all about. As for the future, Piccadilly Action is looking forward to more campaigns that will support, educate and inform the people of the North West. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- COMPETITION =========== Very often videos about the male form are viewed as no more than pure porn, either as the soft variety or the hard stuff. However, now and then, the odd one or two are produced that fall within the accepted guidelines laid down by law,(18 cert) and are no more than a nice artful look at the male body, sexual but decent. We thought it was about time for a change to the format of your favourite food column (in your favourite magazine). As we deliver your magazines each month, we like to try out various eating establishments. With this in mind we intend to report on the hostelry where we end up nose bagging. Commenting on food, service, cost, cleanliness, and value for money. Most of these establishments will not be gay, but we hope we will be able to give you a fresh look at eating out in a particular area, and perhaps introduce you to a new restaurant. So to the table. THE CHINATOWN EXPRESS, 63-65 St Andrew Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne. Tel +44 (0) 91 223 1388. At first, the Chinatown seems just like any other carry out restaurant, until a closer inspection of the waiting area reveals that it is also a self service cafeteria style eating house. The seating however, is the only cafeteria thing about the place. The food is as good as any top of the range Chinese Restaurant, and at a fraction of the price. Our nosebag for the evening consisted of: A) 1 - Hot and Sour Soup and 1 - Wan Ton Soup. B) 1 - House mixed combination, consisting of: 2 spicy garlic chicken wings. 2 prawn on toast. 4 Bar-B-cued spare ribs. 2 Crispy chicken rolls. 2 Aromatic Ready rolled duck. C) 1 Fried crispy noodles with chicken in black bean sauce. 1 Sliced beef with green peppers and bamboo shoots in satay sauce. 1 Fried Rice 1 Fried Beansprouts D) 1 China Tea and 1 Coke. As said previously, the quality of all the above food was on a par with the best. The service was quick with a pleasant smile, and even with an open plan kitchen the whole establishment was spotlessly clean, as were the toilets. However the outstanding point must be the value for money. The total bill being ukp19.25 for two people. If all the places we call into come up to this standard, we are going to have our work cut out in 12 month when we decide on the PULSE award for the very best. See you all next month. Gordon. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- SNIPITS ======= Canada's (federal) Attorney-General has recently announced that he is to introduce amendments to the criminal code to deal more firmly with crimes of hate. The amendments would have the countries judges take a motive of hatred into consideration when sentencing people convicted of crimes against other persons. The changes are aimed at racial and religious hatred. When questioned later he made it clear that it also would apply to crimes of hatred in a persons real (or perceived) sexual orientation. One in the eye for gay bashers eh! By the time you read this, Liverpool's radical bookshop, News From Nowhere, may have closed a few weeks after celebrating twenty years in business. The book shop, a women's co-operative is the towns main supplier of lesbian and gay books. Shop worker Jill Harris said, "the eviction must be complied with by early June, as the landlords want it empty to make it more commercially viable. Please support us by telephoning or faxing Frenson Ltd on 051-709 5747." Frenson Ltd have refused to discuss the matter when contacted by PULSE. Two High Court judges recently caused an uproar over the issue of male prostitution. Their Lordships ruled that under the 1959 Street Offences Act only women could be charged with soliciting for prostitution. The judges - both men - upheld a decision by a magistrate that Andrew Bull, charged with prostitution in Soho, London in 1992 had no case to answer as the charges could only refer to a woman. Scots prisons are sitting on an AIDS time-bomb. Almost one-in-five inmates are taking drugs - many of them are HIV positive and are sharing needles. These astonishing figures were confirmed recently by a prison service spokesman. Roger Lewis, of the centre for HIV, AIDS and drugs studies in Edinburgh told PULSE, "this is really worrying. However what we don't know is how many people have caught HIV whilst in prison." Two men, Stewart McNab and Marcus Brand, both 24, were recently charged with the murder of Glaswegian Raymond Folks, at his London flat on May the 12th. The accused men appeared at Horseferry Road magistrates court and were remanded without bail. Edinburgh Gay Switchboard Trust is to organise a residential weekend conference of Lesbian and Gay Switchboards and associated groups between the 30th Sept - 2nd Oct. Further information can be had from Ian MacNicol on 031-346 1624. The country's first national news and current affairs radio programme for lesbian and gay listeners, Out This Month is to be extended for a further 13 weeks by BBC Radio. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- HEALTH MATTERS ============== A TIME FOR RELECTION In the wake of John Smith's sudden death many of us are reflecting on our own lifestyles and questioning some of the practices which leave us vulnerable. Following his first heart attack John Smith wisely followed sound medical advice and adopted a programme of planned exercise which included conquering the Munroes. He achieved a remarkable feat in climbing over a hundred in his first year of recuperation. However this fell to single figures in the last year, probably as a result of the demanding rigours of high political office rather than any personal complacency. It is difficult to get it right. On the one hand we are all keen to maximise our full potential in terms of achieving a successful carreer, relationship or leisure pursuit. Health is often low on our agenda and only surfaces as an issue when things go wrong. Unfortunately this can be too late, as is sadly demonstrated by John Smith's recent death. This unfortunate turn of events could serve as a prompt for reflecting on our own fallibility. It affords the opportunity of considering ways in which we can control at least some aspects of our lifestyle which affect our general health. Whether it be an increase in exercise, a refinement in diet, limiting alcohol or practising safer sex, we should take note of this sad event and resolve to ensure that as far as possible we avoid the ultimate tragedy of a life prematurely cut short. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- BACKTALK ======== THE MAGIC NUMBER Yet another threat to our civil liberties has been announced. >From July 24th, there are going to be phone numbers that you can only get through to if you have your own telephone and have made special arrangements in advance. The operator won't be able to put you through, and you won't be able to phone these numbers from phone boxes - no matter how much you are prepared to pay. And what are these phone numbers? Why the sex and chatlines on 0898 codes, of course! In the interests of the moral majority, British Telecom (once described by a Church of Scotland Minister as ÔThe Corporate Personification of Evil' - the only time I can remember finding myself in agreement with the Kirk) is implementing new measures to make it very difficult for the casual user to connect to 0898s. BT argue that what they are doing is in the public interest - that they have been inundated with people requesting the barring of 0898s. That may or may not be the case. What is certainly true is that BT have chosen the most vicious way of implementing the barring. Technology already exists on most modern digital exchanges for subscribers to place a bar on premium rate calls themselves. For subscribers who can't do this, BT will do it for them. That has been the case for quite a while. The new system will require telephone subscribers who want to make 0898 calls to fill in a special form in advance and be issued with an individual account number and PIN. Admittedly, they will be able to use these from any phone (the system is based on the Calling Card which allows you to phone from anywhere and have the call charged to your own telephone account). Although the evil day will soon be upon us, BT have done little to advertise things. So, even though BT couldn't provide this information when I asked, here is how to get your application form: telephone 0800 123898. This is a Freephone number and won't cost you anything. An operator will take your name and address and eventually a form will materialise which you have to complete and send off. Mercury will be implementing something similar, but discovering just what that will be and how to sign up for it is even more difficult! All this, of course, is totally useless to anyone who doesn't have their own phone. It's just another pleasure that is going to disappear because of the santimonious bastards who run this country. Many people object to 0898s. There is a simple answer to their objections - don't phone.
