The meeting was a constructive one, and Mr Hansch's open-mindedness was most welcome. EGALITE's aim was to explain to Mr Hansch the current situation of gay people in the Member States and the European institutions, and to find out his views on the subject. EGALITE brought up the issue of the Intergovernmental Conference (IGC), and stressed that millions of the European Union's citizens considered it vital that the new treaty include a comprehensive non-discrimination clause. In line with the European Parliament resolution on the matter, it should refer to sexual orientation. Mr Hansch said that this was a politically charged issue, but that he did want to see the IGC take the European Parliament's opinion into account. As a symbolic gesture, EGALITE gave Mr Hansch a copy of "its" version of the Treaty of Amsterdam (as the revised Treaty is to be known), containing the non-discrimination clause.
