YKE wants to write about those "from mouth to mouth" news so that we can get acknowledged and informed about the things available for us. Therefore, YKE intends to: -provide a periodic low-cost and easy-to-reach means of information, -publish deeds and opinions of interest for the community -spread the deeds, proposals and plans of the ASOCIACION DE LUCHA POR EL RESPETO DE LA DIVERSIDAD SEXUAL(Association for the fight towards respect of sexual diversity). YKE will be published by the end of each month. We hope you will contribute from the coming edition on by the beginning of the year. ASOCIACION DE LUCHA POR EL RESPETO A LA DIVERSIDAD SEXUAL \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Discrimation against gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transexuals, trasvestites(glbt) is well known to us. People from different areas have joined in order to open a space that, in its organization and performance, may propose, study and support ideas, preoccupations and projects that do contribute to the confrontation of that discrimation through the ASOCIACION DE LUCHA POR EL RESPETO DE LA DIVERSIDAD SEXUAL(ASOC) (Asociation of Action in Favor of Respect Towards Sexual Diversity) The specific objectives of ASOC are: 1. To defend the human rights of those who suffer from the discrimination against the manifestation of their sexuality (accusations, legal actions,...) 2. To prevent any sort of discrimation (revision and alertness upon the law, education, information...) 3. To encourage self-evaluation of our practises and conceptions as a group (workshops, chats, education, information...), 4. To promote the respect towards diversity of sexual manifestations inside the Costa Rican community(chats, debates,...) 5. To increase awareness towards other groups that suffer from discrimation (women, diverse ethnic groups, ....) We invite the whole glbt community to take part in the project, propose ideas and participate in the discussions and activities of ASOC. We constitute the core of this fight. Meetings are held every Tuesday night at 8 PM at DejaVu's. For more information, call 285-5368. MOVIMIENTO COSTARRICENSE CONTRA EL SIDA \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ A new group against AIDS has been born. The Costa Rican Movement against Aids was born for the community to organise itself in order to act and solve immediate needs of those infected by the virus. The intention of the group is to improve the patient's quality of life and give advice to the family and friends. Thanks to donations and special activities, the groups offers food, personal hygiene articles, hospital equipment, etc. From August up to date, fourteen patients have been attended, four of those have passed away. The movement invites the gay and lesbian community to participate in the group's activities and attend the meetings held every Tuesday at 8 PM at Dejavu's. For more information, call 285-5368 or 223-3758. IN COSTA RICA ============= LAW PROJECT ON HIV/AIDS \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ A General Law project on HIV/Aids was presented that is going to be polemic. ASOC is studying it for a future declaration. The project includes aspects of prevention, the obligation to introduce instructive topics concerning risks, outcomes and means of transmission to the education, human rights and life, rights of those affected, ban on massive tests of contagion detection, sanctions against infected blood, semen , tissue or organ donors and against those who, knowing they are infected, keep anal, vaginal and oral sex. COMMUNIQUE OF SOLIDARITY ON THE NO VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN DAY: NOVEMBER 25TH \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ On this day, ASOC held a mass meeting by a public parade that led to the 'Plaza de la Democracia' at 4 PM. Pronouncements, denunciations, testimonies and cultural acts took place. The following is an excerpt of the communique: "As we know, gender is not a women's question. Men and women have but existed inside a net of values, norms, expectations, wishes that divide the world in two excluding specially unequal poles. Among these men and women, there are those who give up, get away from, choose not to be or simply do not share one of the main requirements to become a man or a woman: heterosexuality as an obligation, as the unique ethical and morally right possibility to fulfil oneself in love, with one's partner, in sexuality, and in one's way of life. The imposition of ways of being and feeling is an act of violence. The imposition of a "straight" heterosexual life carries along an act of violence denying the persons not only their own identities but also the very legitimacy to fight for it. ASOC, fighting for a respectful, non-violent, non-discriminatory, national culture of the human rights, that should be able to respect all the manifestations of sexuality, joins the fight for the no violence against women, as part of a way of global violence, typical of a patriarchal society that supports unequality and exclusion. TRIANGULO ROSA \\\\\\\\\\\\\\ The Triangulo Rosa Association is the first legally registered glbt organization in Costa Rica as such. Our main objective is to fight against any kind of discrimination towards our community. Prevention against HIV is also another objective. One of our future projects for the coming year is the creation of another groups in other provinces of the country. If you are interested in organizing activities in your province or in collaborating, write to us at: PO Box 1619-4050, Alajuela, fax 234-2411 TRIANGULO ROSA, WORKING FOR OUR COMMUNITY IN OTHER COUNTRIES: =================== SPAIN: MILESTONE FOR THE HOMOSEXUAL MOVEMENT \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ From now on, all discrimination against lesbians and gays will be penalized. The Penal Code was modified on the Gay-Lesbic Coordinator's initiative. Discrimination now is an aggravating offence, anyone who discriminates in the job, provokes hatred or violence against organizations or groups, denies a loan or who, associated with others, promotes discrimination, hatred or violence against persons, groups or associations will go to gaol. The struggle started in the 1989 case of a gay who claimed his share of his peer's estate getting support from big personalities. Our congratulations to the Gay-Lesbic Coordinator and to her general secretaries, Jordi Petit and Gemma Sanchez. LESBIANS' BEIJING-CHINA REPORT: SYNTHESIS \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Summary by Rose Mary Madden Arias from CLADEM From September 4th to September 15th, the IV Woman's World Conference was celebrated in Beijing, China. Lesbians from around the world organised for over a period of two years, planning proposals and diverse strategies for the gathering. During the plenary session, a space for representatives of all the governments to gather around the presentation of reports, a partner from South Africa got to presenty our demands and exerted more pressure through a public manifestation openly showing our presence, which was suppressed by security members of the United Nations. During the days of conference, the discussion on SEXUAL ORIENTATION kept being avoided until the night before closure. CANADA initiated the debate supporting its inclusion in different areas of the Action Platform of the IV Woman's World Conference. Immediately, BENIN refuted stating it was not a topic concerning the conference and expressed its fears that the conference would be taken as the CONFERENCE FOR THE SEXUAL REVOLUTION and demanded the elimination of SEXUAL ORIENTATION to be dignified historically later as a PLATFORM. As 43 countries had been manifest, 25 in favour and 18 against, the Board's President, in the face of antogonic positions, decided to ELIMINATE THE CONCEPT OF SEXUAL ORIENTATION FROM THE ACTION PLATFORM. We conclude that the presence and recognition we achieved in this Conference was very valuable. In the results of the conference, even though a worldly recognition of the different kinds of discrimination and ways of living was not achieved, the line of argument of those countries that defended our proposals was clear and solid, which we assess as a guarantee for the continuation of debate. COUNTRIES THAT ASKED FOR THE INCLUSION OF SEXUAL ORIENTATION IN THE PLATFORM: Canada, Israel, Slovenia, United States, European Community(15 countries), Switzerland, Barbados, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Cuba. COUNTIRES THAT WERE OPPOSED TO THE INCLUSION OF SEXUAL ORIENTATION: Benin, Ecuador, Jordan, Kuwait, Bangladesh, Sudan, Egypt, Libya, Uganda, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Iran, Syria, Belize, Ghana, Argelia, Guatemala. THAT THE WORLD HAD TO DEBATE ABOUT OUR WAY OF LIVING WAS THE MOST POSITIVE ASPECT. TESTING: CUBAN VACCINE AGAINST AIDS \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Users of Internet were able to get a hold of the news: "Vaccine Against Aids will be put to the test" (IPS, Havana, Nov. 13). According to this news, the vaccine is under experimentation withj animals and soon could be with humans. It would be preventive and avoid the infection of the virus(HIV). The tests with chimpanzees were carried out in May in the presence of about 300 foreign experts that met in Havana for the "II International Forum on HIV-AIDS in Cuba". Medicine doctor, Manuel Limonta, director of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Centre (CIGB) assured that the investigators would be willing to be put to the test. At the same time, two other vaccines are being developed-one in the United States and the other one in France-tested in humans in Thailand, Uganda, Brazil and Rwanda. Cuban sources find the vaccine a good prevention for the spread of the disease on a population reluctant to use condoms. In a 1994 survey, 81% of women acknowledged the existence of the condom but only 9% admitted to have used it at least once. The article ends up stating that the achievement of a vaccine would help increase capital sources in order to cope with the economic crisis. In 1994, the medical-pharmacist industry and the biotechnology contributed with more than 100 million dollars to the country. HOW TO DEFEND ONESELF AGAINST HOMOPHOBIA (...WITHOUT BEING NOTICED) \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Have you ever had to fight against jokes and comments as innecessary as homophobic at home, at work or with your friends? Oh, yes, indeed, you have!! If you have found a way to answer elegantly and properly at once without being obliged to get out of the closet, let us know in order to share it with the community. Call 250-9481 ACTION ====== WORLD AIDS DAY ////////////// The Costa Rican Fight Movement Against Aids participated in the activities at the Plaza de la Cultura on December 1st on the occassion of World Aids Day. >From very early on, seven volunteers were giving information about the activities of the organization. Also, people were offered the special edition of 'Gente 10'. The takings from this will be assigned to the home attention of VIH/Aids patients. This was the first public appearance of the group among other organizations that carry on activities for prevention and attention. VIOLENCE AGAINST LESBIANS \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ The Association has begun to carry out informal conversation(chats) about topics that affect the glbt community. The first one took place on November 20th at La Avispa's with the participation of about 30 persons and was jointly organised with Colectiva 25 de Noviembre. Since we were also on the No Violence Against Women Week, we discussed the topic of "Violence against Lesbians". In the introduction, a partner of Colectiva, stated that the patriarchal society wields violence against lesbians since they are women who do not comply with the roles that society imposes on them, such as motherhood, dependence and obedience to men and the availability to satisfy the latter's sexual demands. She mentioned violence inside the lesbian partnership as a matter that ought not to be forgotten, although different in character from other manisfestations of violence outside the lesbian community. She mentioned famous cases of violence against women emphasizing the poor documentation of violence against lesbians due to the impossibility of denouncing. Among the main topics resulting from the discussion is the invisibility of the violence against lesbians. As the victims state, violence is not denounced due to the fear of a bigger exclusion and punishment. Inside the groups and organizations dealing with the violence against women, there has been a tendendy of a lack of visualisation of the violence against women. The public was very interested in the topic of the violence within the lesbian couple. This violence results from many aspects, from the social pressure of keeping clandestine relationships to the internalisation of roles. It was also stated that it is not necessary to show a 'masculinised' attitude in order to exercise physical and psychological violence inside the couple. Due to the interest on the topic, ASOC will carry out a workshop about the violence against lesbians in February that will be promoted by a psychologist with experience on the topic(dates, schedule and places will be announced soon). Our warmest thanks to the owner and staff of La Avispa for all their support. Service of attention to attacked lesbians, CEFEMINA: 256-0544 A GREAT SHOW : "YEAR 0" /////////////////////// The Santander Modelling House had a presentation on December 13th for the benefit of the Movement against Aids. The activity took place at Corobici Hotel at 8 PM. In the midst of a theatrical atmosphere and an excellent choreography, we looked at a unusual fashion parade full of social criticism showing that every one can be innovative and critical. In this activity, the Movement's speaker was Carlos Alfaro who presented objectives and achievements to date. The Movement against Aids wishes to thank all the people that collaborated in the purchase of tickets and specially Casa Santander and its director, Gustavo Hernandez. This statement requested to end tolerance towards homosexuals and called for a campaign against homosexuality. RADIO RELOJ is one of the most popular radio stations in Costa Rica and it's editorials are heard all over the country. We call your attention to this statement and ask for your support to fight the misconception and discrimination it entails. We are asking you and/or your organization to send letters that: 1. point out the homophobic contents of the editorial; 2. point out the misinformation about AIDS that it implies; 3. request that gay and lesbian organizations get the right to replay the editorial in the same radio station; and 4. warn that civil and legal actions will be taken if (3) is not accomplished. The adresses and fax numbers where you can send your letters are at the end of this document. "Editorials of Radioperiodicos Reloj" DECEMBER 1st, 1995. Written by Rolando Angulo-Zeledon Read by Carlos Espinoza-Torres 1. THE AIDS THREAT Editorial 1. " Fight against AIDS is endless. Today, as the International Day of AIDS is celebrated, all the countries of the world have disclosed huge figures concerning the ill persons, deaths, and those expected to die from AIDS by the year 2000. The numbers are worrysome, yet hardly any goverment, institution or group have condenmed the spread of homosexuality as the main cause of contagion. No matter how many options are searched for, the truth is that homosexuality is against human nature. The only fight to prevent this evil is to promote a higher morality, a higher respect of dignity and integrity of human nature. Editorial 2. The campaign for the use of condoms, so profusely promoted across all social layers worldwide, is a solution that seeks to justify deviant behaviour in human relationships. What is needed today is a plea to morality. Churches and spiritual leaders should promote this campaign. There should be insistence on the respect to men's and women's dignity as such. As we do every December 1st., we want to stress the need to encourage a fight against homosexuality so that society may reject it and stop being tolerant since tolerance spreads the disease every day. Editorial 3. Therefore, on the AIDS day, we call for reflection about what parents and children must do; about what teachers should talk about, about the need of being inflexible against an evil that consumes humanity. In the USA, a million youngsters are infected. In the world, 15 millions of men, women and children are calculated to suffer from the disease, 2 million of which will be from Latin America. Drug addicts and homosexuals as well are the natural vehicle of contagion. We feel that, the situation worsens every day and humanity must wake up to a reality which means its own self-destruction,its decadence. And nothing better than the AIDS day to talk about these issues." Rolando Angulo Zeledon Director Radioperiodicos Reloj Apartado 4334-1000 San Jose, Costa Rica. According to the small Larousse's first entry, tolerance means "indulgence, respect and consideration towards all the ways of thinking, acting and feeling, although different from ours..." None the less, in Costa Rica, some persons, without the least justification, seem to ignore not only this statement but also the meaning of the word. We say they do not have the least justification because they are persons who call themselves professionals in the field of communications and information. This seems to be the case of one of the most heard journalists in our country: don Rolando Angulo Zeledon. Don Rolando, on the World Aids Day, on December 1st, showed a great deal of intolerance, which is uncommon in a country boasting of being respectful to one's private life, peace and of trying to keep space for the respect to all human rights. Not only does don Rolando shows immense intolerance but also reaffirms the existence of public misinformation. So, we call on everyone's thoughtfulness as well as his. Let us see the facts. First, the December 1st editorial states that homosexuals and drug users are the natural vehicle of transmission. This is imprecise and dangerous. because the mentioned editor ignores the most recent investigations on the topic in which it is said that everybody is exposed to the AIDS virus and that one of the things that have contributed to the expansion of the disease is having placed a stigma in specific human groups as high-risk groups. This is dangerous since those who do not consider themselves to belong to those high-risk groups have been an easy prey to the contagion. We wonder why it is not mentioned in the editorial that the highest contagion develops in heterosexuals couples in Africa and that it has never been seen as a homosexual issue, as it has been the case of certain groups in the western world. We do not omit the fact that the origin of the disease has not been clarified, but we also want to state that there are several reasonable hyphotheses intending to solve the problem but none makes homosexuals responsible. Prudence demands that those in charge of information-an essential aspect of education-should not nurture hatred and much less beliefs that increase people's ignorance. Secondly, don Rolando encourages Costa Ricans to initiate a campaign against homosexuality. In the Year of Tolerance: how ironic !, In a country proud of its civilism, pacificism and democracy, praised for its respect for freedom and minimal human rights!-it is contradictory. His encouragement can be taken as as the legitimacy of disrespect towards Human Rights from a considerable group of Costa Ricans. Certainly, Don Rolando, the respect for the human dignity should be stressed, but part of that dignity means the respect for everyone's private lives, where we should not be mistreated or tortured. We wonder if your campaigns against homosexuality include the therapies of aversion. Do you no think that kind of editorials favour those attitudes? We remind you that those methods have been condemned by all human rights organizations and by the very Universal Declaration for Human Rights (art. 3 & 5). Do not you believe that intolerance has helped the spreading of Aids? If there were more tolerance, there were not people with the right to stigmatize and put the blame on others for all that frightens them. If there were more tolerance, there would not be so many persons infected for having thought themselves to be free from danger. Finally, we want to think over your statement that love between two persons of the same sex is contrary to human nature. We wonder how should something be contrary to human nature if it can be classified as pathology. A bigger morality means the respect for all the human beings' physical and psychological integrity with their differences and peculiarities. That professionals in communication show and spread ignorance should not be justified now-a-days that there has been a great deal of information about Aids. Neither is it fair to use the radio stations, that belong to the State, as well as all the tax-payers, in order to descriminate and create hatred against groups of Costa Rican that contribute to keep the diffusion of the radio station. We call for tolerance, respect for the human rights of gays and lesbians. And in order to show clearly that tolerance, we request that you should let us exercise our right for response from your news space.
