Gay and lesbian communities in South Africa may find themselves with constitutional protection in advance of that achieved by many Western countries, including the United States. Legal experts and homosexual-rights activists interpret the chapter on fundamental rights in the new constitution to mean that gay and lesbian couples could soon be allowed to legally marry, adopt children, pay the same tax and get the same housing and medical-aid benefits as heterosexuals. In the draft Bill of Rights approved by negotiators at the multiparty talks, discrimination on the grounds of "race, gender, sex, ethnic, or origin, colour, sexual orientations, age, disability, religion, conscience, creed culture or language" is prohibited.
