I was surprised to learn that there are _NO_ "family" restaurants. My friend did recommend though "The Crystal Baking Co." -- s'posed to be great. Also, if you have a desire to try the ubiquitous Mexican fanfare, it is suggested that you do NOT eat Mexican on the Riverwalk; go to "La Fonda", instead. You are familiar with the Riverwalk?? Are you staying at a hotel on the River? It's a lot of fun and surprisingly not overly touristy except for the little boats the run through the canal. But, hey, what the hell, you WILL be a tourist! The main bar people hit goes by the name Bonham Exchange. I haven't been there myself, but I think it's downtown fairly near the Alamo. From: Bil Snodgrass The Gunter is located on the corner of St. Mary's and Houston. Walk south on St. Marys until you come to Market. Take a left and stay on the north side of St. Marys. You will walk one long block and then cross Navarro and on that block you will see a place called the "Crew". It is a gay bar, friendly, but sort of scuzzy, but I seem to meet the nicest people in scuz bars. Anyway go there and pick up a TWIT (This Week In Texas) and it should have a listing of all of the gay happenings and places in San Antonio. From: EAST::"71332.2507@compuserve.com" 3-MAY-1993 14:53:05.54 Hi, Sim, Ying-Da Lee sent me your name and message about coming to San Antonio around the 20th of the month and needing info about things to do in San Antonio. Unfortunately there is no real gay restaurant anywhere in town, and most gay guys here go to lots of places, including downtown, and especially on the River Walk, which can be fun just from the stand point of watching the young troopers and airmen in town for training as they wander around down there. There are lots of gay bars downtown. The oldest one in San Antonio (in Texas?) is El Jardin which is on St. Mary's and Navarro just a few blocks from downtown. Just north of there is The Crew, which is a rather sleasy place with lots of hustlers I'm told. I haven't been there in quite some time. Just behind the Alamo in Bonham is the Bonham Exchange, which is a disco place with lots of younger people. A few blocks north of downtown are four bars - The Silver Dollar, which is a cowboy bar, and right next door another disco/young crowd , called Paper Moon. Then there isanother disco place, called The Wild Club, which has male strippers a couple of times a week. Just south of that one, also on San Pedro, is another stripper bar, at least on Friday nights, which can get rather revealing to say the least, is a place called Nite Owl. There are a few other places in the more central area of the city, but I don't know them. I've been living in San Diego for about 4 years and have just moved back. I don't know whether I will be here the week you are, but if you need or want help, give me a call. If I'm here, I will be glad to show you and your group around. My number is 210-824-7151. I hope this is helpful. Bruce Jarstferrrrr
