Subject: MTSU ARTICLE (archive) By Michael Grantham Middle Tennessee State University Lambda Association has been designated as the state link to LGB campus organizations under the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Campus Project National Homepage. Members of the NGLTF Campus Project Mailing list began the project to create a national homepage through discussions over the interent. The National Page is located at http://www.nenet.org/nenet/ngltfcampus/listindx.htm and is maintained by David Leonard. The MTSU Lambda Association Webpage became the first completed link to the national homepage serving as a resource to the entire LGB community with specific interest directed toward campus organizations. MTSU Lambda Association is currently organizing a few South Eastern states to establish and maintain local sites within GA, MS, LA, AL, and FL. Lambda's efforts are in concert with a national movement toward an empowering era for lesbians, gays, and bisexuals and encourages campus organizations to develope websites as a resource for managing information. Lambda Association's website is located at http://www.mtsu.edu/~mtlambda and offers links to a global LGBT community traditionally kept at a distance by under currents created to keep such groups isolated. Lambda hopes to help foster a statewide alliance slowly forming within the LGBT community. The Uniform Equality Committee, formed to pursue the enhancement of the campus nondiscrimination policy, has relied on internet as a primary information source. Reaping the benefits, the UEC has yeilded considerable successes in its four months of commission. Activists at other schools have commented on this progress and are seeing similar results. In an attempt to bring some insight into local grass roots civil rights efforts, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Campus Project mailing list conceived the idea to link campus groups out of online activism. The speed and freedom of information helps organizations to find one another to share ideas and resources. As one online activist observed, "before, we never knew anyone else was out there." This is the tone of a movement coming of age, and campus organizations in the heat of it are taking notice. States such as California and Wisconsin have long since had such state indexes online. Activists are quick to point out the advances both states have made. The Campus Project mailing list can be subscribed to by sending a message requesting information to Dleonard@nenet.org. Students at universities, colleges, and highschools experiencing deficient campus resources will find active discussions on organization and information management. To link your campus organization to the NGLTF Campus Project Homepage, groups need to send a message to mtlambda@frank.mtsu.edu with the name of the group, a contact and either a website URL or email address. If your group doesn't have this access, call Lambda Association at 780-2293 for information on how to start one.
