April 8 & 9 Documentary Film: "Last Call at Maud's" A look at the development of the Lesbian community in the United States, using San Francisco as a case study. The focus is on a lebsian bar in San Francisco called Maud's. Maud's was the longest running lesbian bar in the United States, and was the gathering place for writers, poets, muscians, artists, and baseball teams. A fun look at the evolution of lesbian community. April 8, 7:00 pm at the Spiritual Awareness Center, 157 NW Franklin, Bend $3.00 April 9, 7:00 pm at the Central Oregon Environmental Center, 16 NW Kansas, Bend, $3.00 Thursday April 20 FLOYD COCHRAN Mr. Cochran was once the fifth highest ranking member of the Aryan Nations at their compound in Hayden Lake, ID. He left the group in 1992 after being told that when the Nations took over his son would be euthanized because of a cleft palate (a genetic "defect"). Mr. Cochran now tours the nation warning of the dangers of the white supremeacist movement, and the legnths to which bigotry and misunderstanding can go. Cochran's visit to Bend is part of a 25 community tour of Oregon Beyond The Closet has organized in cooperation with the Rural Organizing project. Communities include Ontario, Baker City, LaGrande, Lakeview, Grants Pass, Brrokings, Roseburg, Sheridan, Hood River and Astoria. Mr. Cochran will be in Bend on Hilter's birthday. This tour is made possible by a generous grant from the Needmor Fund. 7:00 Thursday April 20, Tower Theater, Downtown Bend on Wall, $3.00 BEYOND THE CLOSET BTC is a lesbian/gay service organization. We provide a wide array of services to the community. Formed in June 1994 the primary focus of BTC has been on public educational forums. These have included Dr. Mel White, former ghost writer for Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and Oliver North; Tim McFeeley, former Director of the nation's oldest lesbian/gay political organization the Human Rights Campaign Fund; Kathleen Saadat, former Affirmative Action Director for the State of Oregon. We also host films, plays, and musical entertainment. In the fall of 1995 Beyond The Closet will be organizing tours of Oregon for Dan Helminiak, author of "What the Bible Really Say's about Homosexuality"; and Letitia Gomez, Director of LLEGO, the national Latino/a gay and lesbian organization based out of Washington, DC. Negotiations are underway to arrange a tour of Oregon for Dr. White within the next year. This fall BTC also plans to host a series of workshops, including; Speakers Training by the Northwest Speakout project, helping individuals learn how to more constructively talk with those who support anti-gay ballot initiatives; alcohol and drug awareness by BTC's fiscal agent, the Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon; couples sessions for Gay and Lesbians; "Anti-Oppression Training," giving people the opportunity to explore their own homophobia, rascism, sexism, & classism. Other fall events include the Portland Lesbian Chorus and recording artists Chris Williamson and Tret Fure. Beyond The Closet publishes a biannual listing of their events, which may move to a quarterlt newsletter within the next year. We also make available coppies of "Just Out," a Portland based lesibian, gay and bi news publication, at The Curriosity Shoppe, The Royal Blend on Newport, Cafe Paradiso, Boom Town Records, Paramount Records, Great Harvest Bakery, Another Side, and the Central Oregon AIDS Support Team office.
