Says OSU policy poorly conceived

WATTS AMENDMENT TO LIMIT MARRIED STUDENT HOUSING POLICIES

COLUMBUS - State Senator Gene Watts (R-Gallowey) today announced
that he will be inserting language into Ohio's biennial budget bill, Amended
House Bill 152, to address the issue of student housing at state-assisted
four year colleges and universities in Ohio .  Watts' move was prompted by
an announcement earlier this week of a significant change in policy regarding
married student housing at The Ohio State University.

     Watts" language will limit married student housing only to married
couples and divorced or single-parent families with children.

     Senator Watts, who chairs the Education Subcommittee of the Finance
Committee in the Ohio Senate, state "this plan was poorly conceived,
discriminatory and could not have enjoyed wores timing, as we are formulating
the higher education budget in Ohio.

     "I believe the Board of Trustees at this flagship institution of Ohio
will not implement this proposal," Watt continued.  "Nonetheless, it is
useful to take this issue off the table so that higher education institutions
can focus on the mission of education rather than social engineering."
