Subject: Tarheel Tidbits Date: Tue, 22 Feb 1994 19:50:47 -0500 (EST) From: anon@queernet.org (Anonymous Sender) And now the latest news and gossip from the Old North State. - The Queen City orgainzers now have the go ahead for the 8th annual NC Lesbian and Gay Pride March and Ralley for 5 Jun despite protests from local Baptist churches. The city parade committee voted 4-0 to grant the permit. - Also in the Queen City, a chapter of Gay and Lesbian Americans, a diverse, nonpartisan coalition of grassroots activists, has now formed. - Two members of the Tarheel Congressional delegation had a 100% voting record on gay issues according to HRCF, freshmen Mel Watt and Eva Clayton. (Zeke Hughes would be interested to know that they are African-American. -YHT) Several received a score of 0% as did both our beloved senators, Jesse Helms and his sidekick clone Lauch Faircloth. - In the Port City, three defenders of liberty and justice from Camp Lejeune were arrested in Micky Ratz on 8 Feb. This was the same bar where the famous Marine Corps gay bashing took place a year ago. - Susan Johnson, author of the banned book "Staying Power: Long-Term Lesbian Relationships," spoke on 28 Jan in the Southern Part of Heaven, defending her book. She stated that the people responsible for banning it from the local high school had a hidden agenda. - As previously reported, the Episcopalians rejected rites for gay relationships. The Bishop wants to keep discussions going. - The Air Force at Pope AFB has lost two tapes used to record the court-martial of a captain of homosexual sodomy. The case may have to be retried. As I sometimes report news from surronding states, the following is from the Palmetto State: - HRCF rated Rep. James Clyburn 86%, the highest score for a delegate from the Palmetto State. Sen. Ernest Hollings got a 56% and that senior homophobe Strom Thurmond even got 25%. Again, several got 0%. - The state Dept. of Health and Environment has recorded 3,608 cases of AIDS in that state from 1981 through 1993. 1,944 people have died. - Navy Lt. Jimmie B. Ford was convicted of sodomy and homosexual behavior in a court-martial on 19 Jan. He also faked his suicide. Facing 17 years in prison, he was ordered dismissed. (I wonder if this was the same Navy Lt. Jimmie Ford who once asked me if I was gay. -YHT) And the following is from the Old Dominion: - The homophobe Oliver North, Republican candidate for US Senate, was blasted by fourteen high-ranking military retirees. The group endorsed Jim Miller in the Republican race. Army MGEN Singlaub said North could not "differentiate between reality and his fantasies." North is favored to win the Republican nomination but would have a hard time beating Sen. Chuck Robb, also a former Marine, according to a recent poll. Keep your fingers crossed. And that is the way it is in North Carolina, my home state, that vale of humility between two mountains of conceit. -YHT
