North Carolina Episcopalians decided Saturday they're not ready to sanction any form of gay marriage. Clerical delegates voted down a proposal to create a rite of celebration for monogamous gay relation- ships at the annual convention of the diocese, Among those voting in favor was Bishop-elect Robert Johnson who said that he favored providing a means for the church to encourage committed relationships rather than promiscuity, and that he wants to keep the issue open. Johnson also has let go the Rev. Jim Lewis from his job as director of Christian Social Ministries for the diocese when Bishop-elect Johnson takes office in May. In April, Lewis, an organizer of the Raleigh Religious Network for Gay and Lesbian Equality, told Tarheel legislators they should repeal the state's ban against oral and anal sex. I would report the results of Friday's meeting at the Chapel Hill High School but I have not seen any press coverage. Perhaps it will be reported in Wednesday's Independent. And that is the way it is in North Carolina, my home state. -YHT
