The State House in NC approved the ban on same sex marriages Wednesday after
it was approved by the senate Tuesday. In NC the governor does not have veto
power (possibly to be approved in a referendum this November), the only US
Governor not having that power. Also of note, both houses had to pass
enabling legislation to even consider the vote in this session, as the
legislature has alternating long and short sessions each year, short sessions
solely for the purpose of passing a new budget (in even numbered years).

Senate Bill 1487 will be law on Thursday once it is signed by the Speaker of
the House and the Senate President.

Today the House took up and voted on SB1487 and had the most substantive
debate yet on the bill.  Approx. 25 minutes.
No one other than the sponsor spoke for the bill* (Rep. Capps-Wake).  The
vote was 98-10.
