Date: Fri, 7 Jul 2000 16:51:12 EDT Subject: A Letter from GenderPAC's Executive Director From: owner-action@gpac.org July 2000 Dear Friend, I'm writing to ask for your support for GenderPAC: the only national organization working for your right to express your gender free from stereotypes, discrimination and violence. To secure gender civil rights we're breaking new ground in Congress, the national media, and the courts -- so none of us have to feel ashamed or afraid because of how we look, act or dress. Our growth has been tremendous, but here's what's been happening while we've been growing: * [Washington, DC] The week before our National Gender Lobby Day, two women were shot to death by a serial killer; police believe they were killed because of their gender. * [New York City] As GPAC activists were discussing hate crimes on Capitol Hill, African-American woman Amanda Milan had her throat cut and died, choking on her own blood, because of her gender. According to some involved several onlookers applauded the assault. GenderPAC is working hard to stop this violence and create a climate of tolerance and acceptance: * GenderPAC kicked off our ground-breaking Congressional Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Project at our 5th Annual Lobby Day in Washington, DC, May 21st,. asking Congressmembers to sign a diversity statement publicly affirming that their own office will not discriminate based on an employee's gender orientation. 60 Congressmembers, including 5 Senators have already signed on! * GenderPAC is opening its new offices in Washington, DC. We will be located in Dupont Circle, not far from Capitol Hill which will really increase our visibility and effectiveness in doing national and Congressional work. * GenderPAC is planning the first National Gender Conference for May, 2001 to focus on topics like gender and the law, gender in media, feminism and gender rights, and queer youth. But to keep up this pace GenderPAC needs YOUR help. If you are not a member, I urge you to become a GPAC member today.
