Wilson Gives ROTC Notice by XXXXXXXXXXXXX Chico State President Robin Wilson has implemented a pro-gay Faculty Senate Resolution by drafting a letter that directs ROTC to begin a gradual phaseout beginning next Fall. The May 1991 Resolution has three parts: "eliminate university credit for ROTC courses"; "exclude advertisements, notices, listings and references to...the ROTC program...from catalogs, bulletins and announcements"; and "withdraw faculty status from ROTC instructors." The 24 cadets currently enrolled in the program have been assured completion of the program. But the phaseout will render new students who enroll next Fall unable to earn university credit for the duration of the four year ROTC program. Freshmen cadets who enroll the following year (Fall 1993) will not receive university credit for ROTC courses. Wilson also directed Major Doug G. Campbell, Chair of the Department of Military Science, to announce the "phased withdrawal of university credit for Military Science courses" in the next edition of the University Catalog. Additionally Wilson will strip faculty status from Military Science instructors at the conclusion of the last course in which credit is awarded. The resolution falls short of an outright ban of ROTC but, if all three parts are implemented, the ability of the program to attract students and instructors will be severely crippled. Maj. Campbell predicts, "If it got to that point (faculty status withdrawn from instructors) I don't think ROTC would still be here." If the Pentagon doesn't drop their discriminatory policy against gay and lesbian recruits before the deadline, the end of CSUC's ROTC program seems inevitable. An executive order from the U.S. President is one of the fastest ways to change the policy. [Originally published in the _CenterStone_, the newsmagazine of the Stonewall Alliance of Chico. ]
