Since 1988 this service has been listed in the Wichita telephone directory and is often the first place people turn to when coming out. Around 100 calls are received each week with the majority requesting referrals to other organizations and businesses. *> Operates a computer bulletin board. The heart of the Land of Awes Information Services is its interactive computer messaging service. Users of the service can communicate with gay and lesbian people from all over the country via their computer. Online, multi-player games, pictures and stories arc also available. *> Publishes The Electronic Gay Community Magazine. This online publication is distributed by gay and gay-friendly computer bulletin board systems all over the United States and Canada with the latest news of interest to gay men and lesbian women. Articles are updated and distributed daily, providing the most up to date information of any gay publication anywhere. This magazine may be downloaded, sent by diskette in the mail, or by fax. *> Provides a Phone Tree service. The Land of Awes Phone Tree works by digitally recording a voice message on the computer system. The computer is given a list of telephone numbers to call. Each person on the list is called and the stored message is played to them. It is an effective way to get the word out on important matters in a short period of time. It is often used to lobby a legislator in a timely manner when an important vote is coming up. *> Publishes "Personally Speaking." This personal contacts publication allows gay, lesbian and bisexual people in the area to meet each other safely in their own homes via mail. The idea for this publication came from numerous requests from people calling the Gay Information Line asking how they can meet someone outside of a gay bar. Since proceeds from "Personally Speaking" go to fund the Gay Information Line, this publication fills two needs. *> Provides a fax service. The Land of Awes receives information from a wide variety of sources A list of gay, and gay-friendly activists is maintained with their interests noted. When news of interest to that person is received by the computer system, a copy of the information is sent to them by fax. *> Collects information. When a group has an upcoming event that is important to the gay community, they are encouraged to contact the Land of Awes by modem, mail, phone or fax and share this information. This is especially important when it comes to answering questions to callers on the Gay Information Line about upcoming events.
