Subject: LAWRENCE: LesBiGays announces 96 awareness week line-up Date: Sat, 23 Mar 1996 15:37:19 -0600 Leslie Feinberg and Wilson Cruz to speak during April 15-22 by Kevin King LAWRENCE - Following up on last year's successful events, LesBiGay Services of Kansas has an impressive line-up of speakers and events for the annual Awareness Week. The University of Kansas student organization will bring such speakers as transgendered activist and author Leslie Feinberg and star of the ABC television series "My So-Called Life", Wilson Cruz. John Duran, California-based civil rights attorney, starts the week on April 15. His speech, "Taxation Without Representation: Don't Tread on Me," focuses on the inequity of lesbigays paying taxes to a government that denies their basic human rights. He also addresses the question "What Are Lesbigays For?" in an afternoon workshop. Duran examines the direction of the lesbigay movement and what lesbigays have to offer America. English Alternative Theatre, a KU theatre company, presents staged-readings of two student written plays on Wednesday, April 17. The lesbian-themed _The Vigil_, by Nicole Dolci, examines the relationship between two female roommates. Alan Pierce's play _The Menage_ is a queer-themed comic murder mystery. Jeremy Auman directs both plays. On Thursday evening, April 18, playwright/performer Paul Bonin-Rodriguez performs his one-man play, _The Bible Belt and Other Accessories_. The plot follows the "sissy-boy" hero Johnny and his friends as they organize to protest the Religious Right movement that has infected their school. The group designs "a fashion weapon of gospel truth" -- an actual belt of bibles. Wilson Cruz, star of the ABC television series "My So-Called Life", speaks about his experiences on Friday, April 19. Co-sponsored by Student Union Activities, Cruz speaks about being one of the few openly gay actors in America and his MSCL role Ricki Vasquez. Leslie Feinberg, author of _Stone Butch Blues_ and _Transgendered Warriors: Making History From Joan of Arc to RuPaul_, speaks on Saturday, April 20. Feinberg discusses the relationship between the transgendered and lesbigay movements and ways for the lesbigay community to be more inclusive. Following the speech, Terra Nova Books hosts a book signing. Feinberg will be signing copies of the new text _Transgendered Warriors_. Terra Nova, 920 Massachusetts, has arranged to have copies of the work in stock before they are commercially available. The first nationally syndicated out lesbian columnist, Deb Price, speaks on Monday, April 22. Price is the columnist who first reported that Sen. Bob Dole accepted a donation from the gay lobby group, The Log Cabin Republicans. She will speak about her experiences in the workplace and relate stories from her columns. Other events for the week include the annual Queer Prom on April 20, and the traditional March and Rally on April 21. There are also panel discussions on increasing the presence of queer issues in the KU classrooms scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday. The HideAway club hosts a drag show on Friday, April 19. The weekday evening lectures are at 8 pm in the Kansas Union. The theatre performances are also at 8pm in Strong Hall. Leslie Feinberg speaks at 2pm on Saturday in the Kansas Union.
