Date: Tue, 1 Nov 1994 18:04:45 -0600 (CST) From: Kevyn Jacobs Subject: "Annie On My Mind" in Lawrence, Nov. 4-20 FROM THE LESBIAN & GAY NEWS-TELEGRAPH OCTOBER 28 - NOVEMBER 10, 1994 PAGE 8 REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION ===================================== 'ANNIE ON MY MIND' ON STAGE LAWRENCE KS - Renegade Youth Theater, a non-for-profit, community based theater group of local young people ages fifteen and older, will produce a stage version of Nancy Garden's controversial Young Adult Novel, "Annie On My Mind", November 4-20 Garden's novel became the subject of much public debate several months ago when the Kansas City office of Project 21 donated it, along with several other books for young adults that contained positive portrayals of young Lesbians and Gays, to the libraries of local school districts in the area. The Olathe, Kansas school district ordered the book removed from the library shelves, and "Annie On My Mind" was burned in Kansas City at a demonstration held on the steps of the board of education offices. The book tells the story of a budding romance between two teenage girls, and their ultimate acceptance of the sexual orientation. The stage adaptation, written by Renegade Youth Theater's director, Kim J. Smith and Nancy Garden. This world premiere will be presented on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 8pm at Renegade Theater, 518 E 8th St. in Lawrence. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students.
