Date 2/22/96 From ADPSYA2.MSHAW@UIAMVS.WEEG.UIOWA.EDU (Mona Shaw): These are the [Iowa House] representives we need to thank for their votes on Tuesday [regarding the bill against recognizing same-sex marriage]. Please thank them all. There is an interesting and impressive story for each one. E.g. Betty Grundberg is the only Republican who voted against the bill. Betty will take an incredible amount of heat for this decision. Let her know we appreciate it. I'm tempted to belabor this with a story about each of them. Please just trust us and thank them. It's best to send your thanks in regular U.S. mail. Legislators are still new with the internet thing, and it's just not as effective. Write them at: Representative Good Person Iowa House of Representatives State Capitol Des Moines, IA 50313 (I guess I shouldn't assume all know to insert the rep's name where I typed "Good Person.") Rep. Tom Baker, House District 71 (D), Des Moines - tbaker@house.legis.state.ia.us Rep. Bill Bernau, House District 62 (D), Ames - bbernau@house.legis.state.ia.us Rep. Ollie, House District 38 (D), Clinton - collie@house.legis.state.ia.us Reps. Bernau, Fallon, Doderer, and Fallon gave outstanding speech on the floor against the bill. Ed Fallon was a particular champion who was the only rep beside Mascher who was a "no" all along and did some amazingly creative and brave things on our behalf. We were able to increase 2 votes to 11. Last Wednesday, this seemed virtually impossible. Three representative who had indicated to us only days ago that they were going to vote against the bill gave stirring condemnations of it during its debate. Including our Iowa City reps. Minnette Doderer and Dick Myers. Thank them. We were able to change the political climate around our issues profoundly. The legislature is aware now that we are watching what they are doing and beginning to respond to us as a force to considered. We still need to work harder on this and risk losing the ground we've gained if we don't continue to build this momentum.
