Date: Wed, 8 Apr 1998 10:32:34 -1000 From: ramsey@math.hawaii.edu (Tom Ramsey) Subject: HAWAII APRIL 8 Hawaii Marriage Case on "All Things Considered" Today, Wednesday April 8 (National Public Radio) In Hawaii: KHPR, 88.1 FM and on other locations, early broadcast: 12:00 noon or 1:00 pm later broadcasts: roughly 5:00 to 6:30 pm Ina Jaffe (please excuse spelling) interviewed attorney Dan Foley for a story to be broadcast today on "All Things Considered." She will probably review the status of Baehr v. Miike and discuss the proposed Hawaii constitutional amendment which will be on the ballot in November of 1998. Happy Listening! Tom Ramsey P.S. Dan Foley's legal fees have been paid by Marriage Project Hawaii, PO Box 11690, Honolulu, HI 96828. All donations to Marriage Project Hawaii are tax-deductible. POLITICAL contributions, which are NOT tax deductible and which go to fight the election battle over the proposed constitutional amendment, can be sent to Protect Our Constitution PO Box 235704 Honolulu, HI 96823-3511 Donations to Protect Our Constitution are limited by law to $1000; donations over $100 are publicly reported with employer, address, and occupation of the donor. Two other political and lobbying organizations, Friends of Marriage Project Hawaii and the Equality Fund, work on same-gender marriage and anti-discrimination issues. Their address is PO Box 11690, Honolulu, HI 96828. The proposed constitutional amendment is a separation of powers amendment: shall the legislature have the POWER to limit marriage to opposite sex couples? Absent this amendment, the marriage decision will be left to the courts in Hawaii. The amendment does not ban same-gender marriage (although that is what the enemies of same gender marriage intended, and that is how the amendment is usually described in the media). For legal and technical reasons, the fight about the constitutional amendment should be (and is) separate from the fight for same gender marriage.
