She will facilitate a broad-based campaign to 1) Obtain a "no" on having a ConCon (constitutional convention); this ballot MAY take place Dec. 6 of this year 2) Obtain a "no" vote on the proposed constitutional amendment passed by the last Legislature, which would give the Legislature the power to limit marriage to heterosexual couples. That vote will take place in November of 1998. Please give Jackie your fullest cooperation, and "mahalo nui loa" to HRC for seeing that Hawaii's struggle has national implications. Now to the "nuts and bolts". Suppose that the ConCon vote takes place Dec. 6; usually, Nov. 6 is the deadline for voter registration. NOW IS THE TIME TO REGISTER TO VOTE, AND TO RE-REGISTER IF YOU HAVE MOVED SINCE THE LAST ELECTION (even if just within Oahu). You may download a voter registration form to be mailed in by contacting my personal WEB page: http://www.math.hawaii.edu/~ramsey Click on the register to vote message, and you'll be transferred to the state's computers for downloading the form (requires also downloading the free Acrobat reader). You may get voter registration forms at public libraries, and at some other government offices. NOW IS THE TIME TO REGISTER. NOW IS THE TIME FOR YOUR FRIENDS AND RELATIVES TO REGISTER. The voter registration among younger people, "liberals", professional people (e.g. University professors), etc. IS DISMAL. DON'T ASSUME THAT YOUR FRIENDS ARE REGISTERED TO VOTE; they often are not. In a single issue ballot such as the ConCon vote (if we have one!), only the organized and dedicated win. BTW, you can vote absentee!!!!!!! You don't actually have to find the polling place. But that requires getting an application and mailing it in on time. More on this later. Best Regards, Tom Ramsey
