Date: Thu, 8 Dec 94 17:59:31 HST JACK LAW IS APPOINTED TO HAWAII'S CIVIL RIGHTS COMMISSION It is now official. Governor John Waihee, during his last week in office (ending Dec. 5), appointed Jack Law, an openly gay businessman, to fill a vacancy in Hawaii's Civil Rights Commission. Jack fills immediately the vacany (which was created by resignation), and will serve until some time in 1996. The Civil Rights Commission is an ongoing commission, which reviews civil rights complaints in many areas of discrimination, including race, gender, ethnic origin, and (for employment only) sexual orientation. Jack is the owner of several businesses in Waikiki, among them Malia's Cantina (a restaurant and bar), The Wave, and Hula's Bar and Lei Stand. Jack strongly supports AIDS relief organizations, Hawaii's Equal Rights Marriage Project, the Equality Fund (a gay and lesbian political action committee), and numerous community organi- zations. This is good news for gay rights in Hawaii, because it emphasizes that gay rights are civil rights. Aloha! Tom Ramsey Secretary Hawaii Equal Rights Marriage Project ramsey@math.hawaii.edu
