Date: Fri, 25 Jul 1997 18:01:02 -1000 From: lambda@aloha.net (Martin Rice) Subject: SA 112: FLASH: FED JUDGE EXTENDS TIME FOR CONCON VOTE Aloha kakahiaka kakou. News broadcasts out of Honolulu this evening indicate that Judge David Ezra has told the state that it has until December 2, 1997 to restage the vote on the question of the Constitutional Convention. The same reports also note that the state plans to continue its appeal of the Judge's original ruling overturning the Hawai`i Supreme Court's overturning of the Attorney General's certification of the Nov 1996 statewide vote. I will obviously broadcast tomorrow's news reports on this ruling. Of a side note: a clip shown on the ABC affiliate had James Hochberg Jr. leaving the courtroom smiling and talking with Mike Gabbard. Hochberg Jr., who sat on the Governor's Commission on Sexual Orientation and the Law fought the commission every step of the way. He also has been tagged by Citizen's for a Constitutional Convention to represent them. Hochberg is employed by Beck & Taylor, one of Honolulu's most conservative law firms, and the only firm in the 80 some odd pages to display a "Christian Fish" as a part of its advertising. Mike Gabbard heads the Alliance for Tradtional Marriage, also closed his restaurant rather than hire "out gays" and was the keynote speaker at that Iowa hatefest in Feb of 1996. The appearance today of Gabbard and Hochberg Jr. underscores what many have felt, that the ConCon is yet another attempt by the Radical Religious Right to undermine the marriage issue in Hawai`i. ~~pau~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ __ __ _ / | / | __| |__ __ _ ___ | |/ _ |_ / _' |__ \ \| / __| | /__ _| ( (_| / _ |\ \ \__ \ |___| |_| \__._\___|_\ |___/ |_____/ left to register to vote against Hawai`i's Constitutional Convention.
