The ABC, NBC and FOX affiliates in Honolulu have confirmed the earlier CBS newsbroadcast that Hawai`i Governor Ben Cayetano plans to sign into law the Reciprocal Beneficiaries bill that was passed a part of a compromise last legislative session. Saying, "Quite frankly, this bill is a major step forward," the governor indicated that he was inclined to sign the bill. He also stated for the record that no major opposition had been presented to him not to sign the bill. Only the NBC affiliate correctly identified the bill that would benefit all couples who are otherwise not allowed to legally marry under Hawai`i state law, as such. The other three affiliates carried the story as a "Same-Sex" issue and story. The FOX broadcast also ran a concurrent story about the meeting between Senators Matsunaga and Chumbley about the ramifications of HB118. Matsunaga stated that he told the concerned businesses that less than 1% of the employees of other businesses and govermental agencies on the mainland opted to take advantage of similar arrangements when offered to them. No date was broadcast for the signing of HB118 during the news conference, which is expected before the June 23rd deadline. Expect follow-stories in tomorrow's Hawai`i newspapers.
