Date: Fri, 28 Aug 1998 17:25:00 -1000 From: Mia H H Lam Subject: CAMPAIGN UPDATE From: Campaign Director Jackie Young Date: August 25, 1998 - Campaign Update Thanks for all your support for Protect our Constitution. With just 73 days left before election day, there is good news to report -- and more work to be done! Based on research conducted by QMark Research and Polling in May, if the election were held then, 49% of registered voters would vote "no" (that's us), 37% would vote "yes," and 14% would be undecided. As I have said from the beginning, our campaign is winnable! Media: By now, you should have heard our ads on the radio. Starting tomorrow afternoon, you will also be able to catch League of Women Voters President Jean Aoki on TV. We have accelerated our media campaign! Fundraising Efforts: Please mark your calendars for our big fundraiser on September 24, 1998, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at Dole Cannery. I have asked members of the executive committee to sell 50 tickets at $25 and your block of tickets should soon arrive in the mail. We also need silent auction items. This is our only large-scale event, and we need the help of everyone to make it a success. Please contact Margot at 739-6263 for more details. Volunteer Recruitment: Please consider reaching into your own networks to help us build our volunteer base. We especially need: 1. "neighbor to neighbor" leaders who can speak to "swing" voters in their own neighborhoods by going door-to-door and phoning. Oahu Field Organizer Melissa Reed has recruited 90 leaders since she began work on July 9, but she needs your help to recruit the additional 120 leaders required by our field program. 2. additional contact names on the neighbor islands. Neighbor Island Field Organizer Justin Leach conducted two successful "NTN" training sessions on the neighbor islands this weekend, but he needs more "leads." Please call Justin if you know of people on the Big Island, Maui or Kauai who would be interested in our work. 3. individuals and groups to conduct brief telephone surveys. There are no sales or persuasion involved, we are just calling to identify our supporters. Please ask your group to "adopt" one night of phone banking between now and election day. Special Thanks: I wish to express my deep appreciation for the efforts of the unions. Last week, ILWU members delivered 3,000 POC flyers to homes on Kauai. The National Association of Social Workers is preparing to phone bank its own members. Mahalo!
