Hello all, I've been lurking for awhile but until my sysadmin or someone returns my phone calls, I'm reduced to borrowing Danny's account (machine) ] one room over. If you're interested in the following, see my e-mail acct below. Colorado, Oregon, Tampa could all happen here in Georgia and there are lots of fundamentalists who have been working the the state capitol to see that it happens. IUm posting on behalf of GAPAC (pronounced gay-pac), Georgia Political Action Committee, a non-partisan group which tries to affect the political process on behalf of the stateUs gay and lesbian community. You may be familiar with the candidate rating sheets that GAPAC distributes to local businesses and bars around election time (AtlantaUs gay publications also publish these). We survey candidates regarding issues of concern to lesbigays, interview as many as possible, check elected officialUs records, and then make recommendations. This year, GAPAC has hired a full-time lobbyist to work the state legislature during its session. We have also been (and continue to be) one of the main funders of the Georgia Aids Coalition (GAC) lobbyist. The purpose of this posting is three-fold: 1. I encourage (beg, plead) everyone to become a member. Hiring a lobbyist is an expensive endeavor and weUre running low on funds. Is he needed? You should hear what goes on down there at the capitol! (who elected these people?) 2. GAPAC is seeking potential board members from outside of the Atlanta area. If you are interested in organizing a group locally or simply willing to be a contact person for your area, please contact me. During a legislative session, it helps to have people contact their state reps and senators regarding specific bills. We already have solid representation from the Atlanta area but we need legislators from outside Atlanta to be contacted by their constituents. 3. Our lobbyist, Larry Pelligrini, holds a Legislative Update session every other Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at 1051 Hudson Drive in Virginia Highlands. These updates are informal discussions of what bills have been introduced, their current status (in committee, up for vote), likelihood of passage, etc. The next session is March 21st. The GAPAC mailing address is P.O Box 8420; Atlanta 30307. Memberships are $10 for Limited/Student; $25 for individual; $45 for contributing/family; $100 for supporting; $250 for Sustaining; $500 for (I canUt remember); and $1000 for PresidentUs Club. We could really use your help, financial and otherwise. The political climate these days is both encouraging AND scary! Megan Phillips GAPAC Vice-Chair megan.phillips@business.gatech.edu
