WASHINGTON, DC The newly formed Gaytor Club of Greater Washington, DC is sending out a call to lesbian, gay and bisexual graduates of the University of Florida across the country to take part in the creation of a national "Gaytor Club." The Club's first goals are to organize chapters in cities across the country and produce a national "Gaytor Directory." Organizers plan to kick off the effort during the University of Florida's 1994 Homecoming Celebration, November 4-6. The Gaytor Club of Greater Washington DC formed after 1988 University of Florida graduate Gilbert Vansoi placed an ad in the Washington Blade, Washington, DC's largest lesbian and gay newspaper, asking local "Gaytors" to get together for football games. Vansoi calls the response he got, "terrific." "I had new messages every day on my message machine," recalls Vansoi. "It's been a lot of fun finding how many of us there are in Washington." The group's size increases with every football game and is expected to grow dramaticly before the end of the football season. In conjunction with the Human Rights Campaign Fund, the largest national lesbian and gay equal rights group, the Gaytor Club created "Gaytor Party Packets" for UF alumni host football parties to raise money for the Alachua County NO ON 1 COALITION, a countywide group working to defeat two anti-gay initiatives on the November ballot in Alachua County. Gaytor alumni in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, New York, Washington (DC), Boston and San Francisco are hosting Gaytor fundraising parties for NO ON 1. Gaytor Club organizers want to keep their focus social - getting together for football and basketball games and organizing trips to Homecoming and to Bowl games. Discussion has included the possibility of raising money for scholarships and assistance to the lesbian and gay student group at the University of Florida, but the group first will concentrate on putting together a national directory to help lesbian and gay alumni network and in other cities and create new chapters. Gaytor Club organizers expect the national response to be overwhelming. "Every alumnus we've talked has put us in touch with more alumni," exclaims "78 graduate Anna Chen. "Now it's just a matter of setting up a data base and starting the communications process. We're really excited." To register or to receive more information about the Gaytor Club call or e-mail: Anna Chen (202)296-3943 (J.AnnaChen@aol.com) or Gilbert Vansoi (703)750-1120 (DCGators@aol.com) Registration forms will be available at Homecoming parties at the University of Florida and in Gainesville's gay dance clubs, the Melody Club & Ambush Lounge and the University Club. -30- *****************************************************************
