The man, Paul Cameron, holds a doctorate in psychology but was expelled from the American Psychological Association in 1983 after falsifying data about gays. He is also barred from practicing psychology in Nebraska, the only state in which he had ever been licensed to practice psychology. According to documents obtained last week, Norton's office paid Cameron $10,125 for advice in Norton's defense of Amendment 2. Despite Cameron's assistance, a judge ruled Amendment 2 unconstitutional late last year. Norton is appealing the ruling. Norton's office has refused repeated requests over the last 12 months to reveal Norton's payments to Cameron. It disclosed the $10,125 figure last week only after this reporter said he would use a freedom-of-information provision in state law to force Norton, who is running for reelection, to disclose the payment. Norton spokesperson Tim Tymkovich did not return phone calls last week seeking comment on the magnitude of the payment to Cameron. A self-described expert on homosexuals, Cameron has produced numerous "studies" claiming that homosexuals are highly likely to engage in child molestation, drug use, violent murder, shop lifting, obscene phone calls, excrement eating, sadomasochism, cheating on income taxes, and even poor driving. Cameron also claims that "gerbiling," the insertion of gerbils into one's anus, is "common" among homosexuals. Cameron's statistics, which have been condemned by scholars as unfounded and unscientific, were used heavily by Colorado For Family Values in its campaign for Amendment 2. In 1984, Cameron said in an Associated Press article that all homosexuals should be put to death. Subsequent literature from Cameron's Family Research Institute has also reportedly cited the Bible in urging a death sentence for homosexuals. Cameron has also called for the castration and quarantinof homosexuals and has urged physicians to force euthanasia on homosexuals infected with HIV. In his memoirs, C. Everett Koop, Ronald Reagan's Surgeon General and himself and Christian fundamentalist, referred to Cameron as a "propagandist" and as "one of the country's mosty outspoken anti-homosexuals." In addition to being expelled from the APA, Cameron was also condemned by the American Association of Social Scientists after claiming to be a social scientist. In 1982, Federal judge Jerry Buchmeyer of Dallas discounted Cameron as a witness and accused him in writing of committing "fraud" "misrepresentations" and "distortions" in his testimony. In court documents filed before the Amendment 2 trial last year, Norton listed Cameron as a potential "expert witness" in the Amendment 2 trial and said Cameron "will testify that in his opinion homosexual behavior is a threat to public health, safety and welfare." Despite paying him more that $10,000 in state funds, Norton never called Cameron as a witness. "We were astounded when the state listed Cameron as a potential witness," said Jean Dubufsky, a former Colorado Supreme Court justice and the lead attorney fighting Amendment 2. Dubofsky also expressed surprise at the magnitude of Norton's payment to Cameron for mere advice. "Most of the litigators who have sought to uphold anti-gay measures have stopped using Cameron because he has been so thoroughly discredited," she said.
