The Curriculum Commission is a statutorily established advisory body to the State Board and the State Superintendent of Public Instruction on all matters pertaining to curriculum framework development and instructional resources adoption. "The State Board appoints 13 members of the Curriculum Commission. There are currently two vacancies, and a third will occur as of October 31, 1996. The State Board is especially interested in applications from classroom teachers, school administrators, and postsecondary faculty who have particular expertise in the areas of reading or mathematics with emphasis on the elementary grades. "The State Board endeavors to keep the Curriculum Commission's composition reflective of California's general population within the specific constraints of law. Commission terms are for four years. Commission members are not paid, but are reimbursed for travel and other necessary expenses. Funding is not provided for substitute teaching personnel. "The work of the Curriculum Commission is important and demanding. The Commission usually meets six times per year with each meeting lasting two or three days. Additional time is required to fulfill committee assignments and prepare for meetings. Individuals applying for appointment need to be both knowledgeable and willing to commit the time and effort required for successful service. "Applications must be submitted to the State Board of Education Office no later than the close of business Friday, January 26, 1996. All applications will be screened and those candidates selected will be asked to appear for interviews. The interviews will be conducted by the State Board's Screening Committee and are anticipated at the March State Board meeting. Announcement of appointments will follow shortly thereafter.
