Governor Wilson fax number is (916)445-4633. Following is a sample letter you can use or modify. Please let me (mamurphy@igc.apc.org) know is you send a letters. September 3,1994 Governor Pete Wilson The California State Legislature Sacramento, CA 95814 Governor Wilson: I am writing to urge you to sign AB 2810, introduced by Assembly Member Katz, which would define and establish procedures for registration and termination of domestic partnerships. The nuclear family is a configuration which only includes approximately half of American families. According to the Demographics Research Unit, of the California Department of Finance, well over a million California children live in single parent or blended families, in which caretakers, who may or may not be married, share a home and are jointly responsible for child care. Domestic partnership should be an available option for families. Regulation of registration and termination of partnerships and families by the state, would reinforce and cement responsible behavior between declared partners, and towards their children, and would allow them the basic rights of patient visitation in health care facilities and rights of conservatorship now allowed to spouses. I think government representatives should be responsive to the changing needs of every kind of family among their constituents. As society changes, we must look toward the future and build for stability today. Family structures need to be flexible to encourage joint responsibility, and offer basic protection for declared partners. In all fairness to the changing definition of family in America, I ask you to sign the Domestic Partner Registration Bill, AB 2810 into law. Sincerely,
