WALTER WILLIAMS Gay, lesbian and gender-variant individuals were as common in America before Columbus as they are among us today. But instead of being despised, feared or ignored, such people had an honored place in many Native American cultures. In this three-hour visit to the Southwest Museum Walter Williams will give a lecture about the social and spiritual role of these people--the berdaches and amazons--and describe what happened to them after colonization. The lecture will be followed by a tour of the museum, when Professor Williams will be available for discussion. Walter Williams, Ph.D., is Professor of Anthropology at USC, and runs the Program for Women and Men in Society. He is author of "The Spirit and the Flesh--Sexual Diversity in American Indian Culture" (1986) and "Javanese Lives--Women and Men in Modern Indonesian Society" (1991) SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 24, 1-4 P.M.
