Subject: IWG NY Times movement letter Date: Tue, 20 Feb 1996 21:57:55 -0500 (EST) From: Chris Purdom The following went out on IWG letterhead listing 2 congregations, 4 religious organizations and 21 clergy from 9 denominations. If you are in the general Philadelphia area and represent a congregation or religious organization or are clergy, let us know if you want to be added - all faiths are welcome. We will also be happy to help start similar organizations in other areas. What your article failed to mention was the growing number of liberal, middle-of- the-road, and conservative people of faith who are coming to realize that the traditional teachings against homosexuality are wrong and anachronistic. Religious organizations, congregations and clergy from many faiths and denominations are organizing across the old boundaries with a cohesiveness that truly challenges the oppressors. This movement is rapidly becoming a major force, but a poorly publicized one; so far only those who oppose it have realized its potential, attempting to quash it through expulsions and heresy trials. Hopefully, as these repressive moves are made public more people will become aware of the struggle. Sincerely, Barbara Purdom Christopher Purdom Interfaith Working Group Coordinators
