Make a powerful statement against the prison industry, homophobia, and the apathy of queers around you by helping out an organization that sends free books to Transgendered, Bisexual, Lesbian, and Gay inmates. LOCKED OUT, a fledgeling orgazation in co-operation and with assistance from the PRISONERS LITERATURE PROJECT, needs volunteers, supporters, and donations of books, money, etc. We are an all-volunteer, collectively-based, non-partisan group of people who are committed to assisting queer individuals cope with the brutality and injustice of the modern American prison system through books, literature, and correspondence. We feel that as long as people in this country are criminalized from birth because of their sexuality, we doubt the fairness of the legal system. We doubt the legitimacy of a legal system in which a majority of people it condemns to life in prison are from a specific racial group or non-violent so-called `drug offenders'. And we doubt that this same system has the moral legitimacy it takes to correct negative social behavior without creating more criminals. If you want to do something positive for queer prisoners and society in general, please come help us send books, write letters, and get the word out to our community. We meet every Tuesday and Wednesday at the Grassroots House in Berkeley at 8:00 pm. The Grassroots House (2022 Blake, off of Shattuck) is only a couple of blocks south away from the Downtown Berkeley BART station. We are in need of space in San Francisco. If you can help or have any questions, please call Kevin at 415-489-7279. Please drop off book donations at Bound Together Books, 1369 Haight Street, San Francisco.
