Since we are a program of the Community Lesbian and Gay Rights Institute in New York City, our first responsibility is to those who are either gay, lesbian, or bisexual. However, bigotry is bigotry, and if we can eliminate discrimination based on a person's sexual orientation in the workplace, we will have gone a long way in furthering civil rights for us all. The first step towards equal employment opportunity was to develop a base line of information on the status of Corporate Diversity. Therefore, the Wall Street Project initiated the process to conduct a bi-annual *Census of Corporate America* on employment policies on sexual orientation. This Census is a road map to those companies which protect and those who actively discriminate against their employees. An overview of the results of the first Census is contained in the following report. *Key Findings from the 1993 Wall Street Project Census of* *Fortune 500 Service and Industrial Corporations* -- One employee in four works for a corporation that has a written sexual orientation policy. -- 5.7 million workers are employed by such companies -- This represents 25% of the total corporate workforce -- 134 Fortune 500 Service & Industrial Corporations have written sexual orientation non-discrimination policies. -- 72 are in the Fortune 500 Service Corporations -- 62 are in the Fortune 400 Industrial Corporations -- Most corporations with written sexual orientation policies have adopted these policies since 1990. -- Since 1990, the number of companies with such policies has more than tripled -- Corporations of all sizes have adopted written sexual orientation non-discrimination policies. -- Workforce size ranges from 750,000 to 275 -- Median workforce size was 16,500 -- Many corporations with sexual orientation policies are in diversified service, financial, or high tech fields. -- The three most frequent fields among corporations with sexual orientation policies: *Industrial* Service 12 Computers/Office Equip. 16 Diversified Service 8 Scientific/Control Equip. 15 Commercial Banking 7 Pharmaceuticals 13 Life Insurance -- Most corporations with sexual orientation policies are based in the Northeast or the West. 43% are based in the Northeast 30% are based in the West 22% are based in the Midwest 5% are based in the South 42% are based in the states of CA and NY alone -- Sexual orientation non-discrimination policies are generally adopted when employees ask for the policy.
