LORETTA SANCHEZ AND DR. BEATRICE MEDICINE TO RECEIVE AWARDS Sept. 15, 1999 - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force will host its 10th annual "Honoring Our Allies" awards reception at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4 at The Galleria at Lafayette Plaza, 1155 21st Street in Washington, D.C. This year's honorees include House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt, Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez, D-CA, and Dr. Beatrice Medicine. Also garnering recognition will be Frank Kameny, one of the co-founders of the Task Force, who will receive the "Lifetime Achievement" award, and Virginia Apuzzo, who will receive a "Special Welcome" to the Task Force. Apuzzo recently left her job as the highest gay and lesbian official in the White House to join the Task Force's Policy Institute in New York. "Without the support of our precious allies, the struggle for justice and equality would be lost," said NGLTF Executive Director Kerry Lobel. "We lift up these individuals for their unwavering and selfless commitment to the cause of human liberty." Tickets to the event are $75 and up and may be obtained by calling 202-332-6483. Media wishing to cover the event, which will include speeches by the honorees, may obtain credentials by calling the NGLTF Communications Department or emailing delliot@ngltf.org. Gephardt is a long-standing champion of equality. He was an original cosponsor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and is the lead sponsor (with Rep. John Conyers, D-MI) of the Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 1999. A strong proponent of the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS, Gephardt co-sponsored the Early Treatment for HIV Act, supported the Ryan White Care Act and the Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS legislation. Sanchez upset anti-GLBT and right-wing conservative Rep. Bob Dornan in 1996, and defeated him again in 1998. She is a cosponsor of both ENDA and the Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 1999 and helped defeat the Largent Amendment, which would have prevented same-sex couples from jointly adopting a child in the District of Columbia. Dr. Medicine is an anthropologist and a member of the Standing Rock Lakota Nation and has lectured and published on the role of gender in Native American societies. Her groundbreaking work has redefined how Native two-spirited people have been perceived in the social sciences and among Native Americans. _____________________________________________________________________ Founded in 1973, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force works to eliminate prejudice, violence and injustice against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people at the local, state and national level.
