ANTI-IMMIGRANT BILLS MOVING IN CONGRESS There are two anti-immigrant ``immigration reform'' bills moving through Congress. In the House, H.R. 2202 sponsored by Lamar Smith of Texas would place a cap on refugee admissions and eliminate admissions categories for adult children and siblings and restrict those for spouses, minor children and parents. THIS BILL IS SCHEDULED TO BE REACH THE HOUSE FLOOR ON MARCH 18! CALL YOUR CONGRESSPERSON *NOW*! In the Senate, a bill sponsored by Alan Simpson of Wyoming would reduce the total number of immigrants by up to one-third and would institute a zero-immigration moratorium starting from 2006. This bill is currently being supported by California's U.S. Senator DIANNE FEINSTEIN. Contact her and let her know how you feel about her stance on immigration issues. She can be reached at The Honorable Dianne Feinstein, 11111 Santa Monica Blvd, #915 Los Angeles, CA 90025 phone: 310-914-7300, fax: 202-228-3954 On Friday March 15 from 11am-1pm there will be a protest at Senator Feinstein's office (at the corner of Sepulveda and Santa Monica). IMMIGRATION LAW PROJECT HOLDS DIVERSITY VISA WORKSHOP On Monday March 4, the Immigration Law Project of the Gay and Lesbian Community Services Center held a workshop on applying for a diversity visa (commonly known as #the lottery#). The seminar was well-attended and was run by two immigration attorneys who volunteer regularly at the Center. Call 213-993-7677 to make up an appointment for a free consultation with them or to get more information about the Immigration Law Project. LATEST HAWAII NEWS On Tuesday, March 5 the Hawaii House passed a constitutional amendment which says that ``marriage is between a man and a woman'' and would nullify any attempt by the Hawaii Supreme Court to legalize marriage for same-gender couples. On the same day, the Hawaii State Senate passed a bill which would establish statewide domestic partnerships with some of the benefits of marriage. If you know anyone in Hawaii, you should have them contact their Hawaii State Legislator.
