This bill specifically bans any marriage that does not meet Utah standards, and singles out same-sex marriage. The bill passed a few minutes after midnight by the state Senate during the last day of the 1995 legislative session, placing its validity in question. The Utah State Constitution ends the session at midnight on the 45th day. Chris Ryan, President of the Utah Log Cabin Club stated, "I'm not surprised that Gov. Leavitt signed the bill. It was pushed through the legislature at his urging. The law is premature, and may bring into question more than same-sex marriages. We don't know yet who else may be affected. We do know that discrimination cannot be tolerated. The playing field must be made and kept level." "Gays are the last group that society can safely scapegoat and discriminate against. This will only be changed by education. Utah Log Cabin Club will be working in the future to get this law overturned and to prevent other discriminatory bills from becoming law. We simply want to be treated like everyone else." Utah Log Cabin Club has started a fund to help fight this law.
