My name is Doug Ferguson, and I am the youth representative on the Human Rights Campaign Fund Board of Governors. Last weekend, I met with the HRCF Board and presented a "Youth Action Plan" which calls for increased involvement by HRCF involving GLBT youth issues. It was well received, but my work is really cut out for me in implementing the proposal. Part of the proposal, which received full funding from the board, is a Youth Steering Committee to oversee a portion of the National Coming Out Day known as the "Coming Out on Campus" program. The steering committee will be made up of students and youth regional representatives who will be responsible for organizing NCOD activities on college campuses in their respective regions. It will be chaired by me and the female youth board member, who has yet to be appointed. If you (or someone you know) would be interested in the female youth board position, is under 25 and has a strong history of activism, please forward me a resume at my home. My address is: Doug Ferguson 605 Jones Ferry Road KK6 Carrboro, N.C. 27510 We are especially interested in candidates who are women of color and from the Midwest or West, although all qualified female applicants will be considered. Once I receive your resumes, I will forward them to the members of the Nominating Committee of the Board for consideration. The final decision will be made by approval of the full Board in May. Youth Board members are expected to attend the board meetings (two a year with travel expenses paid by HRCF), encourage membership by students and youth in HRCF, represent youth/student concerns at Board meetings, and assist with fundraising efforts. We are also interested in seeking people who wish to serve as regional reps on the NCOD Youth Steering Committee. We need people from all parts of the United States with energy and enthusiasm to oversee coordination of NCOD events at college campuses nationwide. They will also assist in finding individual campus contacts for NCOD organizing. National Coming Out Day is on Oct. 11 every year and has seen remarkable growth recently. It is run by the HRCF Foundation, the non-profit, eduational arm of the Human Rights Campaign Fund. Please contact me if you have any questions regarding the role of youth in shaping the future of HRCF. I think you will be pleasantly surprised with the changes being made at the nation's largest and most effective lesbian and gay organization. -- Doug Ferguson HRCF Youth Board cdfergus@gibbs.oit.unc.edu
