"Deborah Glick has the vision and experience to prepare the Borough of Manhattan for the 21st Century," says Victory Fund Executive Director Brian Bond. "Her exemplary skills as a community leader and coalition builder will serve all Manhattan residents well." The Borough President is the chief executive and advocate for the more than 1.5 million Manhattan residents. "Nothing breaks down anti- gay stereotypes like placing outstanding gay men and lesbians like Deborah Glick in the political spotlight," says Victory Fund Deputy Director Kathleen DeBold. "As Manhattan Borough President, Deborah will serve the largest constituency ever represented by any gay or lesbian elected official in history and that's one enormous spotlight." All Victory Fund candidates undergo rigorous screening to determine their viability for the office sought. "While it is important to our community that Deborah is an out lesbian," Bond says, "it is equally important that the people of Manhattan receive the very best government possible. Deborah Glick is exceptionally qualified to get the job done." In 1990, Deborah Glick won Manhattan's 66th district seat in the New York State Assembly, making history as the state's first openly lesbian or gay legislator. Extremely effective and well-liked by her constituents, she has been reelected every two years since then. In November of 1996 she won with 85% of the vote. A lifelong champion of civil rights for all people, Deborah has worked hard to obtain legal status for domestic partners, to repeal adultery and sodomy statues, and to extend state law to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation. Deborah's presence in the legislature resulted in the Assembly's passage of the Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination bill. The Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund is a national donor network that helps qualified openly gay and lesbian candidates overcome the obstacles that have historically denied them fair and equal political opportunities. Since its inception in 1991, the Victory Fund has generated almost $1.5 million for qualified openly gay candidates.
