VICTORY FUND RECOMMENDED CANDIDATE PROFILE
Sherry Harris for Seattle City Council

The Victory Fund's very first candidate, Sherry Harris made history in
1991 when she became the first openly gay African-American woman
elected to office. Since then, Seattle's dynamic city council member has
emerged as a respected leader and spokesperson for the gay and lesbian
community. She is a co-founder and chair of the Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual
Caucus National League of Cities, and has incurred the ire of the Radical
Right by traveling around the country to speak about gay civil rights and
campaign against anti-gay ballot initiatives.

As a member of the Seattle City Council, Sherry has consistently been an
active advocate for our community, securing increased city funding for gay
youth services, assisting with Pride events, and helping individual gays
facing discrimination. She has passed resolutions condemning anti-gay
discrimination and supporting gay and lesbian rights, and helped get a
Domestic Partnership registration law passed in Seattle. Her work on
HIV/AIDS includes securing more funding for prevention, directing the
Health Department's coordination of services, passing a resolution
supporting the AIDS Cure Act, and leading the effort to establish an AIDS
Memorial Park.
