Date: Wed, 05 Oct 94 21:58:51 EDT From: GLAADATL@aol.com GLAAD Atlanta News October 5, 1994 by Carl Lange Creative Coverage "Pride & Power" is the cover story of the October 1 issue of the Atlanta "Creative Loafing." The story by Richard Shumate explores the realities of the political power of the lesbian and gay community in Atlanta. The story addresses the propaganda claims of the Radical Right about the power of the gay community vs. the realities. It discusses the realities of the small number of activists involved yet the respect for the large numbers in the gay lesbian voting block. Two examples given were the unseating of Senator Wyche Fowler by the community and the recent about face courting of the community by Fulton County Commission Chairman Mitch Skandalakis, who last year attacked domestic partnership. Perhaps most importantly it addressed the dynamics of the so-called separatist vs. assimilationist camps of the community and the affect it had on the Olympics Out of Cobb campaign. The story concludes with an optimistic look at the maturation of the Atlanta community. Creative Loafing should be encouraged for such incisive and accurate coverage Write: Editor, Creative Loafing, 750 Willoughby Way, Atlanta, GA 30312; call 404-688-5623 Bad Numbers in Oregon and Idaho "Measure 13," in Oregon and "Proposition One" in Idaho are two anti-gay/lesbian initiatives facing the voters. "Measure 13" is deceptively titled "The Minority Status and Child Protection Act." Among the provisions of the Act are a ban on public funds "expended in a manner that has the purpose or effect of promoting or expressing approval of homosexuality" and an adults-only restriction on "the availability in public libraries of books and materials . . . which address homosexuality." Organizers encourage everyone outraged by this censorious and hateful legislation to speak out in the mainstream press.
