Sunday, December 1 marks the ninth annual World AIDS Day, a day of reflection, commemoration and hope for the future, symbolized by this year's theme "One World, One Hope." Throughout the U.S., individuals and organizations are gathering their strengths and resources to illuminate the continuing struggle with HIV/AIDS. The following is a regional listing of some of the events across the nation: New York-AmFAR Sixth Annual World AIDS Day Luncheon. Hosted by actress Natasha Richardson and AmFAR's Dr. Mathilde Krim, this event will be held at the United Nations (UN) on December 2 and will recognize five honorees for their outstanding efforts in the fight against AIDS, including Elizabeth Taylor, AmFAR's Founding National Chairman. AREA's (American Run for the End of AIDS) Sunday, December 1 march will begin at Washington Square Park at 7:00 PM and travel to City Hall for an AIDS Memorial Vigil. San Antonio-World AIDS Day Organization Fair. Twenty-two local community HIV/AIDS service providers will gather at the San Antonio Main Library on Sunday and Monday, December 1-2 to provide education and information to the public. The Chicago Historical Society (CHS) is featuring an afternoon of poetry, prose and performance to acknowledge the contributions of Chicagoans in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Every 2 seconds, from midnight November 30 through midnight December 1, CommuniTV will flash the names of people who have died from AIDS across the screen. A Sunday, December 1 program will feature the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus and a blank panel from the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt to which names of loved ones lost to AIDS will be added.
