They will challenge the APA's use of Gender Identity Disorder (GID) to diagnose a disease and stigmatize individuals who transcend gender norms. Additionally, activists will educate the public and the psychiatric community about the ways that GID is being used to hospitalize and victimize teenagers who identify as transgender, lesbian, gay and bisexual. FLORIDA FUNDAMENTALISTS TO BAN GAYS FROM CHRISTMAS: A group of fundamentalist pastors are seeking to exclude the predominately gay Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) from participating in the annual Christmas parade in Key West, Florida. The city commissioners are proposing to grant a permit to the Lower Keys Ministerial Association only if the group agrees not to discriminate against any group. "It's a community parade, and we feel everyone in the community should be afforded an opportunity to participate," said Commissioner Jimmy Weekly. "We're a viable part of the community here," said Bruce Zabov, an MCC board member. "Our beliefs are no different from their's. I feel we have an absolute right to be part of a Christian parade." City officials said the matter may come to a vote at an October 16 meeting. For more information contact the MCC at (305) 294-8912. The summit will focus on providing leadership and organizing skills for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employee group leaders through workshops, speakers and informal discussions.
