HOMOPHOBIC ANTI-DRUG SPOT TO BE CUT: Due to an effective media campaign mounted by GLAAD and the community response it generated, Partnership for a Drug-Free America (PDFA) will re-edit a television public service announcement (PSA) that suggested that drug use ultimately leads to sex with men, which was portrayed as a social ill worse than drug abuse. In a letter to GLAAD dated July 10, PDFA President and CEO Richard D. Bonnette agreed to delete references than were offensive to lesbians and gay men. "Our goal remains crystal clear: keeping kids off drugs," said Bonnette. "If that mission is clouded by a perception of offense, however unintended, it may dilute -- or interfere with -- our basic message." For more information contact Alan Klein (GLAAD) at (212) 807-1700 or e-mail klein@glaad.org; or Richard D. Bonnette (Partnership for a Drug Free America) at (212) 973-3500. GAY BASHING MURDERER ASKS FOR CLEMENCY: Terry Helvey, serving a life sentence for the vicious murder of gay Navy Petty Officer Allen Schindler in 1992, is attempting to have his sentence reduced. On October 27, 1992, in Sasebo, Japan, Helvey and his accomplice, Charles Vins, beat Schindler so badly that a medical examiner compared the injuries to those that would occur in an airplane crash. In the ensuing trial Helvey made it clear that he felt justified because Schindler was gay. Helvey's clemency hearing is scheduled for July 16.
