Sens. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and Paul Simon, D-Ill, are introducing a bill to permanently reauthorize the law. The law requires the U.S. Department of Justice to collect data on hate crimes -- crimes that show evidence of prejudice based on sexual orientation, race, religion, ethnicity, or disability. GLAAD MEDIA AWARDS IN LA AND DC : Ellen Degeneres, Paul Reiser, David Schwimmer, and Cybill Shepherd will be among the presenters at the 7th Annual GLAAD Media Awards at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles on March 10. Awards will be given for Outstanding Studio Film, Television Series, Television Film, Film Documentary, Album, Song, and Theatre. The ceremonies will be broadcast live via the Internet through GayDaze at http://www.gaydaze.com. In Washington, DC the Media Awards will be held on March 13 at the National Press Club. Featured presenters include Marsha Scott, Candace Gingrich, and Dan Brenner. ILGO TO QUESTION PARADE PERMIT BIAS: Hearings will begin Monday, March 11 at 10am regarding the Irish Lesbian and Gay Organization's (ILGO) suit against Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, Police Commissioner William P. Bratton, and the City of New York. The suit charges that the City's parade permit system "...on its face and as interpreted and applied by the NYPD, is unconstitutional and ILGO has been unlawfully denied a permit to march (in protest)." WOMEN'S HEALTH CONFERENCE: The 3rd annual "Women's Health 2000" program at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) will cover a broad spectrum of women's health topics, including menopause, lesbian health, and healthy skin.
