The Sundance Film Festival is internationally recognized as the most important showcase of American independent cinema, and has become a celebrated cultural event. "For the independent filmmaker, Sundance is the pinnacle" said Tamra King, Entertainment Media Director for GLAAD. "Sundance has always embraced diversity and included films that deal with gay and lesbian issues in their program selections" added King. The twelve full-length feature films dealing with gay and lesbian issues screened were: Believe Me; Bound; Celestial Clockwork; The Celluloid Closet; Different for Girls; Everything Relative; Frisk; Hustler White; It's My Party; Late Bloomers; Stonewall; Tender Fictions; and numerous short films. The gay and lesbian film subjects ranged from Santa Monica Boulevard hustlers, in Bruce La Bruce's drama "Hustler White," to the twilight love affair of two middle-aged women in a conservative small town in "Late Bloomers." "GLAAD's mission is to promote fair, accurate and balanced images of gays and lesbians, and Sundance should be congratulated on their inclusive spectrum of our lives" noted King.
