Seagram & Sons, Inc., The Advocate and The Stonewall Union will bring "The Long Road to Freedom: The Advocate History of the Gay & Lesbian Movement" to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing and Cultural Arts Complex at 867 Mt. Vernon Avenue. The exhibit opens on Thursday, September 5 at 1:00 PM. The Long Road to Freedom colorfully chronicles the gay and lesbian movement with provocative and poignant photographs, cartoons, articles, interviews, advertisements and covers from The Advocate, the national gay and lesbian magazine. The exhibit takes visitors on a journey through time, from the Stonewall rebellion (the start of the modern gay rights movement), to the present. The visual retrospective explores the civil rights struggle from the inside, providing a stirring scrapbook of gay and lesbian history featuring the personalities and events that have shaped a movement. "The Long Road to Freedom is a profoundly important testament to how far gay men and lesbians have come since the days of Stonewall," said Donna Red Wing, GLAAD's director of community affairs. "And this exciting exhibit brings the human struggle for civil rights to life for everyone." The Long Road to Freedom's 1996 nine-city tour began in Portland, OR and will travel to five more American cities this year. The exhibit will stop in Columbus, OH and Ann Arbor, MI in September, Washington, DC in October, Charlotte, NC in November and Atlanta, GA in December. Last year's tour started in New York City in June, 1994 for the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall rebellion and attracted more than 60,000 visitors. The Long Road to Freedom at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing and Cultural Arts Complex runs from Thursday, September 5 through Thursday, September 12. The exhibit is open to the public on Tuesday through Sunday from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM and on Tuesday and Thursday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
