Special guests and presenters at the ceremony included Debbie Allen, Adam Arkin, Bill Brochtrup, David Crosby, Ellen DeGeneres & Anne Heche, Topher Grace, Sean Hayes, Richard Kind, k.d. lang, Judith Light, Lucy Liu, Eric McCormick, Garry Marshall, Debra Messing, Megan Mullally, Kathy Najimy, David Hyde Pierce, Lynn Redgrave, Caroline Rhea, Doris Roberts, Kerr Smith, Tracey Ullman, Bruce Vilanch and Rita Wilson. The Murmurs, Erin Hamilton and Rufus Wainwright all performed to the sell-out crowd of 1,800. At the ceremony, GLAAD honored Whoopi Goldberg with the organization's Vanguard Award, which was presented to the Oscar-winning actress by Sharon Stone. This award is given to a member of the entertainment or media community who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for lesbians and gay men. Goldberg's impressive list of film credits include portraying lesbians in Boys on the Side and Deep End of the Ocean. Over the course of her career, Whoopi Goldberg has been a tireless champion for the rights of children, the homeless, and for those with HIV/AIDS. Melissa Etheridge and Julie Cypher were presented GLAAD's Stephen F. Kolzak Award by Tom Hanks. The award is given to openly lesbian or gay individuals in the media for outstanding contribution in combating homophobia. A couple for more than ten years, rock musician Etheridge and director/producer Cypher have been one of the entertainment industry's most visible couples and parents, recently featured on 20/20. The award is named for a highly successful Los Angeles casting director who devoted the last part of his life to fighting AIDS-phobia and homophobia within the entertainment industry. Talk show host Roseanne was given a special video tribute by GLAAD for her outstanding contributions to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community for more than a decade.
