Individual donations collected towards a matching grant of $5,000 from Jacques Soukup & Kirk Thomas of Mitchell, South Dakota now total $4,783.21. We are $216.79 away from receiving the matching grant money. News members and donations from longtime members have given us a boost very near the goal in the last few days. These represent the total of individual monies received since the Jan. 1, 1997 and do not include a $2,000 grant from the Gill Foundation of Denver which would not be included in the individual gifts catagory. 3. FACES Newest addition to infrastructure. FACES recently purchased a new Packard Bell 133 mhz computer with 33.6 modem, 24 megabytes of RAM, 1.7 gigabyte harddrive, 15 inch monitor and much more. This new computer has created an opportunity for FACES members to search the world wide web for news and items of interest at FACES' South Dakota Alternative Library. It is also used in cataloging FACES growing magazine, book, and video tape collections. The new computer will be linked via a local area network very soon to FACES older Gateway 2000 P5-75 computer which also underwent a....FACESlift. 32 megabytes of RAM memory were added to the Gateway bringing the total to 48 megabytes. Also a 33.6 modem was added for extra speed in file transfers. FACES computers are used to create webpages, newsletter and all communications. Additionally, FACES has created large databases and maintains the financial records of the corporation. Another recent addition, a scanner, has helped FACES publish photos of the library and items to the website at http://www.rapidnet.com/~facessd/. FACES efforts in these areas also opens up these computers to low income b/g/l/t/2s persons who could not otherwise afford access to the internet or the information on the internet. One new low-income Lakota member who had had no computer experience recently spent several hours surfing the web to his amazement and enjoyment. He, in turn, rewarded FACES by ironing our new rainbow flags hanging on our walls. Encouragement of the use of FACES library and resources by members of all minorities is a constant effort. FACES of South Dakota, Inc. officially incorporated in October 1995 as a non-profit 501c3 organization to serve the bisexual, gay, lesbian, transgendered and two-spirit communities of the state. It has published webpages, a monthly newsletter, and is currently planning events for the summer and fall across the state. FACES plans include opening a safe-space community center and library in Sioux Falls in the next year for use by area organizations and groups.
